2019 Subaru Outback front windshield suddenly developed a crack for no reason. I was driving on the highway, holding a smooth steady speed, and was actually looking at the location where the crack started. I heard an audible sharp "crack" sound and I saw a 6" vertical crack suddenly appear in the windshield starting from the bottom middle of the windshield. There was no reason for the crack to develop -- no rocks or pebbles hit the windshield, no other cars were nearby, and no external object came into contact with the car. I had just purchased the car a couple of weeks earlier. Over the next few days, the crack spread sideways left and right in the form of a T. except for the initial crack, which happened while driving, the expansion of the crack has happened when the car has been sitting in my driveway. I was sure I was not at fault for the cracking, so I went online to search and I found plenty of similar complaints from other Subaru owners (see https://www.cargurus.com/cars/discussion-T82803_ds994225). this seems like a common problem that was not disclosed at the time of purchase of the vehicle.

I was driving down the road and heard a loud crack. I didn't think anything of it because I didn't see anything at the time. A few days later my wife was driving the car and heard a loud crack and looked at the windshield to see a crack forming across the windshield. It reached almost to the driver side view way. There was not a point of impact it started on the very edge of the windshield out of sight from inside the car. I thought maybe a rock came out of no where and that is what my wife told the insurance company when we got it fixed by safelite, then I saw the notice about the defective windshields and told me to file the claim that is what happened to us.

I was driving on a highway when a chip suddenly appeared on the windshield on the left side on the windshield. I thought this was strange considering I was in the left lane of the highway with a large median and no trucks near me. Over the next hour the chip turned into a 6 inch plus crack. I have since had the windshield replaced under my car insurance policy.

Outback

  • 5,000 miles
The windshield of my 2019 Subaru Outback spontaneously cracked. I was driving down a highway at about 50 mph, with no one in front of me or coming the other way. The windshield was not hit by road debris or anything of the sort. There was just a loud "pop". the eyesight functionality is now inconsistent as the crack extended from 6 inches to across the whole windshield in a few hours. The temperature was not below freezing and was about 45-50 degrees. The costs to replace a windshield like this are exorbitant because of all of the "safety" features and re-calibrating involved. I brought the problem to the attention of my local Subaru dealer and was told it is not covered under warranty. I inquired about known defects with the windshield and was told there are no defects with the windshields in the Subaru Outback 2019.

Outback

September 20, 2019. I was driving to work surrounded by an open field and nothing else. A spontaneous fault appeared in my windshield. On the way home the same day, a second one appeared out of nowhere and without anything striking the windshield. Overnight the second fault grew long cracks from it which we noticed. This is clearly a manufacturing fault. I feel badly because it is my first Subaru purchase and have been mostly delighted so far. There is no impact to the car's windshield, and the damage spontaneously appeared in two places just hours apart.

2019 Subaru Outback purchased December 2018, sand strike chipped and cracked the windshield within one month. My windshield was cracked starting under the wiper blade, at the lower center of the windshield, and cracked upwards about 5 inches, and spilt in two different directions. One length about 9 inches and the other side about 12 inches, and the cracks seem to be extending. The car was parked in my driveway. As I see it, around the crack there are no cracks, dings, chips, or any marks. The look of the crack doesn't resemble different shatter. My car is a 2019 vehicle that only has about 10,000 miles so quite new.

Windshield is too soft as I two places that have cracked and one that chipped. The items that hit the windshield were small and shouldn't have caused the damage they did. I've had other vehicles that were hit by much bigger debris and no damage. Windshield is substandard. All damage occurred while driving on the freeway. I can provide photos but I did have safelite repairs two of cracks.

I bought my Outback new at the end of August 2019 and since then the windshield has cracked 3 times and I have had to replace it all 3 times. I was driving all 3 times. Twice I believe a pebble hit the windshield but the third time nothing hit the windshield. Luckily when I bout it the salesman suggested I get the extended windshield insurance. Now I know why. There is something that needs to be done with these windshields, they are dangerous.

I was driving into work on a smooth road in clear conditions when I heard a pop. Windshield had a large star bust and crack spreading from the center. Nothing hit the windshield. There weren't any extreme temps (it was about 60 degrees out) and I didn't have the heat or ac on.

Outback

  • 15,000 miles
I was driving down the highway and my windshield cracked on the bottom left or drivers side. There was no impact on the windshield of any kind. No traffic and smooth highway. Temp was around 66 degrees. Started out as a 5 inch crack from the bottom up and had a very small divot. Then spread to a 10 inch crack very quickly. I called the dealership and they said crack was caused by outside force due to the tiny divot. They say the only way for a divot is impact with a outside force. That is not a true statement. A small divot can occur from a stress crack of from spontaneously cracking. The eyesight technology does not work with any other windshield, you must buy the factory windshield. I do not feel safe driving my car with a subpar windshield. Please help in this very serious safety issue being ignored by Subaru. I have zero confidence in the new windshield. This needs to be addressed.
