Camry

  • 96,000 miles
Vehicle exhibits extreme delay in acceleration, particularly at highway speeds. Gas can be to the floor and there is little to no response for at least one minute, not even a jump in RPM aaa a result of the increased throttle. Trying to merge on to the highway is dangerous when the vehicle remains stuck at 40mph for at least one minute, if not longer. Even once the vehicle has been brought up to speed, trying to change lanes or pass is near impossible as there is little to no response to engaging the throttle. This is dangerous and could easily result in an accident.. I have seen thousands of complaints regarding this issue. Transmission has a generally delayed response, vehicle rolls backwards when transitioning from brake to gas, even on flat ground. This is yet another hazard seemingly brought on by the automatic transmission. Vehicle was part of the torque converter recall. The recall repair was performed and it didn't make any difference for the vehicle. The transmission feels like it is on the verge of failing despite the vehicle still being 'young' and well-cared for. It has always been serviced by a dealership that claims this is normal. The amount of hesitation in the transmission is not and can not be normal. The car drives like its half asleep. It has been getting worse recently and I fear the transmission is going to fail, or the vehicle malfunction is going to result in an accident.

Vehicle shutters during light acceleration around 10mph-30mph. It develops a mild hesitation and lasts a few seconds unless acceleration is stopped. I continue accelerating and it passes. This just started after 100,000 miles and is consistent -happens all the time.

Camry

  • 65,000 miles
The vehicle exhibits shutter and vibration between 25 and 50 mph. The vehicle was taken to Toyota dealer where software update for transmission was performed. Technicians said vehicle was shutter free. The shutter did not improve any after this update. Vehicle was then taken to independent mechanic where transmission fluid was flushed twice. Mechanic noted that fluid was extremely dirty required 2nd flush to fully clean system. Vehicle had approximately 70,000 miles at time of incident. Mechanic noted that transmission likely needed replaced but new fluid would help with the issue. Vehicle improved after fluid change but the shutter has now returned with 125,000 miles on vehicle. The shutter feels like the car is running over a rumble strip in between the 25-50 mph range as the car shifts gears.

problem #55

Jan 292019

Camry

  • 110,000 miles
Transmission failure. Transmission was experiencing torque converter shudder. Dealer replaced original torque converter at ~106,000 miles under warranty enhancement. After replacement the transmission developed a vibration between 30-40 mph. Took car back to servicing dealer (hoselton Toyota in East rochester, NY) and was told transmission had failed and that replacement was not covered by the warranty enhancement. Dealer has made the claim that the failure is not related to the torque converter replacement or torque converter shudder. They are claiming a faulty transmission cooler is to blame for the failure. Time elapsed between original warranty repair and diagnosis of out-of-warranty transmission failure was less than 3 months. At time or original repair the dealer did not diagnose any other faulty components and did not make recommendations for replacement of any transmission or related components.

As I begin accelerating the car shudders and does not respond. Seeing many complaints with the same exact problem. The hesitant acceleration has almost caused me to get T boned & rear ended multiple times. I took my car to be checked and the problem is with the transmission assembly needed to be replaced and recommended filing complaint with the manufacturer for a service campaign concerning sputtering and the torque converter the problem is definitely a safety issue!

Around 40-45 mph the vehicle starts to stutter/shake when changing gears. I look online and these cars have problem with the torque converter and Toyota would not fix it because they said its not a recall. I took it to the dealership but the technician said that he cannot feel in and neither does his supervisor. I feel the stutter/ shake everyday when I drive the car.

As I am accelerating between 20-50 mph the car shudders. I called my local Toyota dealership and they want to charge me a diagnostic fee of $140 just to see if that is the problem. My son has a 2014 and my daughter has a 2015 and all have the same exact problem. I have 110,000 miles on my car, my son 80,000 and my daughter 70,000 miles. This should be a recall since we all have the same exact problem. I am afraid as we are accelerating to enter the freeway and the car is stalling we might get hit from behind. Its definitely a safety issue!

Had the same issue 3 years ago they took my car for 3 days trying to fix it. It's stuttering a lot. First time took it in the dealer had it for a day. Took it back right after I drove off. Then they kept it for 3 days after that. Now I'm having the same issue since last year and nobody seem to be paying attention to my complaints. Driving 40 mph and it does the stuttering for seconds at a time every single day.

Camry 4-cyl

The contact owns a 2012 Toyota Camry. The contact noticed abnormal sputtering and a strong vibration coming from the vehicle while driving 20 to 50 mph. The dealer (advantage Toyota valley stream, 400 w sunrise highway, valley stream, New York 11581, 516-887-3200) determined that the intake valve needed to be replaced. The part was replaced but, within a month, the vehicle was taken back for a second diagnostic testing where it was diagnosed that the transmission assembly needed to be replaced. An independent mechanic inspected the vehicle and recommended that the contact check with the manufacturer for a service campaign concerning sputtering and the torque converter. The manufacturer and the dealer (hillside Toyota, 139-65 queens blvd, jamaica, NY 11435, (718) 571-8211) were contacted and an appointment was made for diagnostic testing and repairs. The contact was waiting for a response from the manufacturer to determine if they would approve the recall repair. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was not available.

Camry

I was just at a stoplight. I was the first car. When I went to accelerate the car did not pick up speed for at least a full minute. I was afraid someone driving behind me would run into my car or start honking because I was driving so slow. It happened at the stop light prior too, but it wasn't as noticeable because I ran into another stop light almost immediately. I called Toyota and was advised to take the car to a certified Toyota dealer after I read a report on cars.com that said the problem might be due to a combination of an engine control module software glitch and a faulty torque converter. I later read that the brake pedal may need adjusting because the gas pedal thinks the brake pedal is on.

Camry

  • 72,000 miles
While driving on any road between 20 and 40 mph, 3rd and 4th speed, the transmission shudders and while pressing the gas, the vehicle hesitates. Sometimes it is somewhat clear to accelerate, other times it feels like you are fighting a wall that will not move. I believe from what I have read that it has to do with the ECU and a possible faulty torque converter. This should be looked into by the NHTSA proactively, and not left to the individual consumer to see if the issue resolves itself. If the car fails in moving traffic, someone could hit me from behind. At this time, I am having to go from 2nd speed to 4th speed by 40 mph to go around 3rd gear altogether. This is not the way the car should operate. Vehicle is in motion when this happens on any road at any time.
