  • 85,000 miles

About 85,000 the yellow triangular warning light went on. I immediately brought the car to the dealer. They put in several quarts of oil. It happened less than a month later. The service man told me there is a problem with the engine in this model Prius and I need a new engine. Now I need oil every 600 miles or less. I am planning to speak to the Service Mgr today. I always bring my car to the Toyota dealership for repair. Has anyone had the engine replaced at the dealership's expense????

Prius

  • Automatic transmission
  • 101,868 miles

After reading other posts here it would appear Toyota has an issue with the 2010 Prius engine at 100,000 miles burning oil at an excessive rate. No check engine light came on in my 2010 but at 101,868 I was left with a non functioning engine despite having it towed to the dealership immediately after hearing issues. I drive mostly highway to work and put on about 20k a year. Couple summer trips with the kids and I hit 100,000 quicker than most people will. They know its an issue now so it won't become a huge problem as they will fix it going forward. Unfortunately most of us are left with an electric paperweight in our driveway because it conveniently occurs just as the warranty expires.

  • 100,000 miles

Our 2010 Prius started burning oil at about 85,000 miles. The problem got a lot worse very fast. AT 100,000 miles. the dealership taped up the oil cap and told us to drive the car for 900 miles. When they opened it up a couple weeks later, it was nearly EMPTY! The dealership says we need a new engine for about $6000. They said there's no Toyota recall or extended warranty for this problem. I called Toyota today to ask what they can do for us. The customer service representative said they won't do anything since there's no recall or "Customer Service Program" for this car.

I pointed out that there are a lot of complaints online about the 2010 Prius burning oil starting at about 90,000 miles. Toyota Guy said he had created a "case number."

I asked when Toyota will acknowledge there's a problem with that particular model. Toyota Guy said when there's a "significant number of complaints." I asked how many is "significant." Toyota Guy said he doesn't know. I asked how many complaints have already come in. Toyota Guy said there's no database with that information. I asked to speak to his boss or someone in quality control. Toyota Guy said no. I asked how I can start the review process for Toyota to investigate whether there's a problem with this model. Toyota Guy said I can't.

My theory is that this oil burning problem is happening primarily with cars that are driven at high speeds on highways for prolonged periods. That's really the only way a 5-year-old car will already have 90,000+ miles on it. Possibly the 2010 cars that are only driven in the city won't have this problem unless they're sold and the second owner does a lot of highway driving. If my theory is correct and the 2010 Prius is unfit for long-term highway driving, then Toyota needs to notify owners and compensate them.

The summary: Toyota won't acknowledge that there's a problem with the 2010 Prius burning oil at high mileage. We have the automotive equivalent of a paperweight sitting in our driveway.

Problem started about a year ago at 120,000 miles. Car is burning oil like crazy. Usually about a month after I have the oil changed the low oil warning light is on and I have to add 3-4 quarts of oil to the car. The mechanics are shocked and have never seen anything like it. Can't believe that essentially a month after the oil was changed the engine is basically dry. Toyota needs to step up and fix this problem.

  • 116,000 miles

No known excessive oil use before this time. Low oil pressure warning light came on at 116,000 miles. Last oil change @ 112,000. Had oil checked. Down 3 quarts of a 4.4 quart engine capacity. Had oil changed at 119,000 miles after adding 3 more quarts over the last 3,000 miles. I had the dealer start a precise oil consumption measurement test. Brought the car back in after 3 weeks and 1,000 miles. Down 1.1 quarts. The dealer said this is within acceptable / normal limits. They suggested the following; 1 - Do nothing, just keep adding oil as needed (it's within normal parameters). 2 - Replace PCV value. (As other posters to this web-site have noted, this isn't likely to fix the problem.) 3- Replace pistons and rings for $4,164. 4 - Try a heavier weight oil, maybe 5-30 instead of the 0-20 spec for the car. I think I will go with option 4 for now. I think this is a know defect. Saying 1.1 quarts for every 600 miles is normal is masking a large problem. I believe Toyota is trying to avoid culpability in product defect liability.

My 2010 Prius began to use oil....didn't know until the dreaded red flashing triangle came on........engine almost dry.....need three and a half quarts of oil.......failed a consumption test and the inside of the tail pipe is wet with thick black oil......my gas mileage is not good as a Prius should be and I worry this burning oil is ruining my engine. Reported it to Toyota customer service and hope they replace the engine or fix the problem on their dime.Very very disappointing and depressing!!!!!!!!!!

I burn through about a quart of oil every 1000 miles on my 2010 Prius. It's really annoying to have to put oil in it every few weeks. I've had vintage cars that didn't take this much maintenance. I'm the second owner but if I look on Toyota's website, I can see that oil changes were made at regular intervals since new. To say that 1 qt every 600 miles is normal is a slap in the face to all of us. I will likely never buy another Toyota and definitely not another Prius.

Prius 4

I purchased this vehicle in 2013, it had about 20,000 miles. I bought it as a "certified pre-owned", which means extended warranty 10 yrs or 100,000 miles, plus free oil changes for life. All I had do to was bring it in every 5,000 miles for service, rotate the tires & top off my fluids. Sounds pretty good, but that ended in December 2014, after having the car only 1 1/2 yrs!

I went to start my car and it made a knocking sound, like a car without enough oil. I immediately turned the car off & checked the oil. There was no oil on the dipstick. I added 1 qt & the oil is now slightly visual able on the dipstick. After taking my car in to Fred Anderson Toyota, they had no explanation. They said it was 1/2 low. Nothing to worry about. They changed my oil & filter & told me to check the oil every time I filled up the gas tank. At this time my prius had 82,000 miles.

Update from Aug 31, 2015: My next trip in to Fred Anderson Toyota was for my 85K service. Which is not for oil change, just tire rotation. But my car was 1 1/2 qts low, so they added oil and started an oil consumption test. There was no external source of a leak. After driving 1200 miles, I returned to Fred Anderson. I was told that I did not need to do an oil consumption test, because my car was not on the list of cars that might need the test & that prius does not use oil.

Update from Aug 31, 2015: I went in 5,120 miles later for my 90K service, on 5/13/15. On 5/31, I added 1 qt of oil, then again on 6/16, I added another qt of oil. When I went back to dealer on 7/8, I was 1/2 qt low. After complaining again about excessive oil loss, the service tech suggested that I do an oil consumption test. I explained that I had already done one, that was thrown out. I never even got the results of the test! He preceded to change my oil & start another oil consumption test! He told me to return between 1100-1300 miles & not to check the oil.

I returned 1250 miles later & my car had used 1/2 qt. According to Toyota specs, its ok to use 4 qts of oil every oil change!! (My car only holds 5!) Toyota will only do something if your car uses 10 qts every oil change!

My next trip to Fred Anderson Toyota was 3,423 miles later. This visit was for tires rotation, NOT for oil change. Before I left home, I checked my oil & knew that I was over 1 qt low. After my service was complete, I went outside to check my oil before checking out & going home. No oil was added. After talking to the service manager, they added 2 qts! So, in this 5k time frame, my car used 2 1/2 qts of oil, which now equals 5 qts every oil change, again, my car only hold 5 qts.

Still. this is not a problem for Toyota, not until it increases to 1 qt every 1,000 miles!! I bought this car because of the "Family Plan", with the FREE oil changes. Many people with a Prius (that does not use oil) don't even check their oil! Well, if I didn't, my engine would have blown.

I researched this car before buying it, but these issues weren't seen in 2012, when I was researching. I will never buy another Toyota & I will never again rely on some one to change my oil, because I cant trust these service techs to do their job and I cant trust Toyota to be realistic. After all, if Toyota is saying this is not a problem, that is totally unrealistic! I'm losing 5 qts of oil every oil change & my car only holds 5 qts.

I purchased a routine maintenance contract when I purchased my car. After approximately the first couple of years the dealership suggested I start using synthetic oil making my oil changes every 10,000 miles. I still took my car in every 5,000 for routine maintenance, checks, topping off fluids. I, of course, didn't realize if they were having to top off excessively. When my car reach 4 years and I was out of warranty and my service contract final, I took my car to Oil Can Henry's at the 10,000 mile mark in early the Fall of 2014 only to find out I had not even 1 quart remaining.

At 86,000, I am using almost 3 quarts per 5,000 miles. The dealership is aware of some of my issue and comment that this does happen with this model. They have offered to do an oil compression test. No matter what they find out, they have no fix.

excessive oil consumption

What's up Toyota? Every Saturday I need to drop a litre or oil in this car. Something is wrong. This is our 3 rd Toyota car that we bought first Prius. We bought this car at 24000 k, once it hit 110000k that is when it started to go down hill with oil. With all the information now on the internet about the oil issues it has a problem. The Prius does give fantastic gas mileage, now we need to add $45 month in oil . Mmmmmm

In our case I will not give any more money to the dealership for extra work to find a problem that can't be fixed. Toyota knows their is a problem but will not say anything or address it. This is not a little problem. .............

The dealerships in our area try to get make work projects like change my inside air cabin filter for $80 bucks. ( I replaced my filter , 2 for $15 on line. ) all other work on my dime. We'll see ya Toyota Prius I'm done

I can go on and on but life is to short to worry. I will sell this car and buy something else . Hopefully not need to check my oil every Saturday....

Good luck to all.

Toyota Prius 2010 started had excessive oil consumption around 85000-90000. Spent about $1500 have the dealer to seal the timing cover but did not fix the problem. It still consumes about 2 and half quart of the oil per 5000 miles. No longer under the power train warranty. But think this is a common defect among the Toyota engines. Need have a recall on this one.

I have a 2010 Prius that recently started burning oil. I did an oil consumption test with my dealer, Frontier Toyota, and learned that it is burning 1 quart of oil every 1000 miles. Toyota says this is within "normal limits". This is wrong. I can see a quart every 5000 miles, maybe, but not every 1000 miles. Toyota needs to fix the piston ring issue and pay for it. Same as all the others. From 92000 to 102000 no problem. Was using full synthetic and was giving it 10000 between oil changes. Checked at 5000 and clean and full. 102000 to 112000 fine for the first 5000 clean and full. Checked at 7000 or 8000 and was dirtier then normal and down a little, I think I just got it changed a little earlier.changed at 120000. Should probably check my records but at tire place getting tires. So 125000 I started to notice the below bottom dot level! Put in a quart. Dirty by the way. 130000, questioned dealer (Maplewood Toyota), did a little Internet research and found out a little about some Camry and corolla's with same engine and burn issue. Didn't know about this site.

130000 to 140000 it was a quart every 2500 to 3000, high mile car small oil res. Not a big deal. 142000 it started getting even worse, every 2000 a quart.last 10000 mile interval a quart and a half will bring it to the 2nd dot. Scary low, not even sure way I would even have to change the oil...just filter.. just kidding.

Going to call Toyota and going to see about rings and pcv leak per Internet search.

Anyway, 160000 on it and just got STP oil treatment for oil burning.

WARNING FOR YOU 100000 MILERS! Start checking your oil and call Toyota to complain when you start seeing the level drop.

The complaints about oil consumption for this vehicle are similar. I went in for my oil change at about 110,000 (had the car since 30,000) and the tech told me there was only 1 quart of oil in the engine. I was very upset with the Toyota dealer as I was convinced they did not put enough oil in the engine. They did a consumption test and sure enough it was burning or losing oil. (There were no leaks).

The explanation I received and that comes up time and time again is the light weight rings they installed in the vehicle to get better gas mileage. These rings get stuck and oil gets through.

I called Toyota (1-800-331-4331, press 4) today (5/27/2015) to complain and ask if they are going to do offer any type of recall. They indicated they have provided warranty enhancement for several vehicles for the same issue including Camry, Scion, Matrix and others. It is only for certain years and factories that they dealerships have reported this as being a problem. They don't look at it until they get a lot of complaints. They say they have not heard this is a problem for Prius.

I put about 2 quarts in for every 1000 miles. I described the problem to my local mechanic and he gave me one possible treatment to try. There is a three part product made by BP. They add one product to the oil and let it run through the engine then drain the oil. They then change the oil and put in an additive. They have had some success with this product on other vehicles to free up the stuck rings.
