The contact owns a used 2002 Toyota Sequoia SUV which was purchased in 2005. He stated that the vehicle would accelerate unintentionally while in the park position. The rpms would idle extremely high and the vehicle would attempt to accelerate. He had to depress the brake pedal hard enough to prevent the vehicle from moving forward. There were no recalls describing the failure. The contact was awaiting repairs. The failure and current mileages were 99,500.

Our vsc started acting up when we purchased the vehicle 2-1/2 years ago from carmax. After owning it for not more than 2 months the vsc lights and brake light would come on and stay on until we would turn the vehicle off. Then the computer would reset itself. Then our back passenger side wheel bearing went bad and we had Toyota fix the wheel bearing problem. Toyota stated that after they fixed the bearing the vsc computer wouldn't communicate with the wheel that was fixed. They knew the vsc computer went bad and told us they wouldn't fix it for free. It would cost $900 to fix the faulty vsc computer. We needed an inspection sticker and they passed the vehicle with all the vsc lights and red brake light on. This means that the vehicle is very unstable to drive. Our son has leukemia so we haven't had the money to fix the issue and the vehicle needs an inspection sticker. The local inspection place in Texas said that they will not pass this vehicle if the red brake light is on. Toyota knows there is an issue with this vsc computer in this 2002 Toyota Sequoia.

2002 Toyota Sequoia has been operating since @ 62,000 miles with a non-functioning vsc/ABS system. See that this has not yet been officially recalled, but can find all kinds of info and complaints on the web about this issue. Dashboard lit up with all relative warning lights & vehicle has no ABS nor vsc functionality. How could this important safety features well documented, chronic failure not be recalled? it is not exclusive to the 2002 model year either. This is very inappropriate. How many people have to die or get injured before this well documented safety equipment failure is responsibly addressed with a recall. I hope my complaint helps the tally towards this recall. Consumers of this vehicle have bought it with a critical safety system that fails. Toyota must be made to rectify this product safety and quality issue!

Today on my way home, the vsc off and vsc trac lights came on. Whenever I apply my brakes, the car shakes a lot. I thought it was the rotors but I now think it was this system turning on when it wasn't suppose to. On the way home today, my Sequoia did not shake at all. There are a ridiculous amount of threads on tundrasolutions and edmunds about these lights coming on with 00-03 Toyota Sequoias. Most everyone has had to have a computer replaced because of this. Quotes for this are between $1,500 and $2,500. I don't have that type of money and I don't feel I should be responsible for this problem because it is a safety issue and so many others have had this same problem. There should be a recall. I just bought this vehicle a few months ago because we expecting our second child and needed a larger vehicle. I chose a Toyota because of reliability but I'm afraid that could be a problem if so many people are having issues with this vehicle.

  • 90,000 miles
While driving a 2002 Toyota Sequoia SR5 2 wheel drive SUV near the end of March 2009, the trac off, vsc trac, brake and ABS warning lights simultaneously came on. I was traveling approximately 55 mph on a dry road at night in heavy traffic. I moved off the highway to check the manual which emphasized the possible seriousness of each light. It said to contact a Toyota dealer. I called earnhardt Toyota in mesa Arizona who finally worked on the vehicle several days later for the vsc/trac/brake/ABS problem, and a front brake vibration/pulsation. No help on the pulsation problem since I was told I needed to turn the rotors again. On the vehicle stability control/traction control/anti-lock braking system/brake warning lights, the service associate offered that it was a "common" problem, could be caused by a loose gas cap or an expensive computer (in the thousands of dollars). He sated that no "codes" were set other than a "low voltage" which could be caused by a bad battery or corroded connection. I cleaned the battery terminals completely, checked the battery, and made sure the gas cap was tight. The warning lights now come on at some point every time I drive the Sequoia. Earnhardt Toyota told me it should not affect the actual braking systems. How do they know that" being told of a false continuous or intermittent safety warning light can lull one into a questionable sense of safety. These lights and safety systems need to work reliably without having Toyota just say they know about this common problem. Does it affect actual vehicle stability control and emergency braking? on numerous internet sites, I find this same problem is mentioned frequently. Also a large number of complaints are on file now with the NHTSA. I rely on the warning lights and their underlying systems to work as advertised, but Toyota now makes me doubt that reliance. Does there have to be a large "body count" for NHTSA to order a recall to fix this well known safety problem"

(1) the dashboard lights for ABS, vsc, & traction control flickered, and then remained on permanently. (2) the ABS and vsc have malfunctioned which seriously affects the braking & stability control of the vehicle in emergency handling situations, endangering person(s) in vehicle. (3) technician at marin Toyota in san rafael, ca stated this was a common failure of the 2002 Sequoia. (4) searching online forums and the NHTSA complaint database also show this a common problem. (5) our family needs to be safe in this car. I hope something can be done.

The contact owns a 2002 Toyota Sequoia. While driving 45 mph, the vsc and trac lights illuminated on the instrument panel. The contact heard a loud noise coming from the front passenger side tire and the vehicle began pulling to the right. The dealer replaced a gasket that was covered in brake fluid. The vehicle was taken to the dealer three times for the same failure, with the most recent occurrence on October 1, 2007. The dealer stated that the skid control computer failed and would cost $2,500 to replace. The VIN was unknown. The current mileage was 73,330 and failure mileage was 71,000.

I own a 2002 Toyota Sequoia 4X2. The vsc/trac lights came on after I had the battery replaced on Dec. 20, 2006. My Toyota specialist could not figure out what the problem was but said that the Sequoia's seem to have multiple problems relating to brakes and computers. I took it to the dealer on Jan. 8, 2007 and they said it has been a common/ongoing problem. Toyota has not recalled this problem though. They could fix the ecc (electrical computer component) at the cost of $1,600. I said no thanks.

During the past few months 'vsc trac","vsc off","slip or skid","ABS",lights is going off while driving at low speeds like making turns and trying to accelerate from stop, even though the pavement is dry this happens every time ever since, brakes automatically apply causing the car to cut off or prevent the car from accelerating thus results in not able to control the car, there were instances that making turns is very dangerous due to the fact that the vehicle behind you can hit you due to the fact that failure to accelerate when needed because the ABS/vsc systems override you from accelerating by pressing the gas pedal, this seems to be a common complaint in online forums like edmunds.com tudrasolutions.com, and there was a discussion in there that someone's car with the vsc failure caught on fire, pls investigate.

Trac off and vsc trac lights intermittently turn on, sometimes when vehicle is in motion and sometimes when vehicle is in idle. While in motion, if trac off and vsc trac lights turn on, beeping occurs, grinding or "whirring" noises are audible and brakes cannot be depressed. Since the first incident, I've changed the rear differential oil and found small metal bits in the oil.

I have a 2002 Toyota Sequoia SR5 4X4 and my ABS, brake, vcs, trac lights on my dashboard remain on. I have researched this problem on www.edmunds.com and on www.tundrasolutions.com and appears to a common problem for owners of 2000-2003 Sequoia models. My 2002 has had several recalls that dealt with brakes and suspension. It appears that when the brake recall was conducted they did not upgrade other parts of the braking system including computer sensors/modules. I believe this is a safety related defect to these model years that should be covered by Toyota. What I read on the above websites is that Toyota has charged owners thousands of dollars to repair this defect when it should be a free repair.
