2006 Toyota Tacoma tailgate is dangerously weak, and is unable to support what most consider normal weight for a truck tailgate. Although substandard design may be considered "buyer beware", truck buyers expect a tailgate to support the weight of normal truck use activities. Toyota provides no warning or caution anywhere that the tailgate is of insufficient strength to perform normal 1/2-ton truck duties, and typically (per internet forum threads) tells their customers that it is their problem and that they should not expect to be able to safely use the tailgate for anything more than hiding the inside of the bed. Since Toyota has produced a substandard designed part, they should have provided a visual warning on the part to alert customers to the danger their product imposes if used in a traditional manner. Since they did not do so, they should be held liable to provide a redesigned part to their customers or full restitution for the purchase price of the vehicles. A google or similar internet search on "Tacoma tailgate forum" will substantiate my statements beyond my personal experience with the tailgate bending. Toyota claims that the tailgate is just a door to the bed but on its own website sella a "bed extender" that utilizes the tailgate for more bed space.

Front and rear mud flaps tear loose and beat side of vehicle as they do not completely separate when this happens. On the front at highway speed driver will hear very loud noise from banging on side of vehicle. When this occurs on the rear passenger side the flap will contact the exhaust pipe and burn the plastic.if someone is traveling at highway speed this could lead to a fire in the rear wheel well. My front passenger side broke around 20 June 2008 two weeks later 3 July 2008 drivers side broke, yesterday 7 Aug 2008 I noticed the rear passenger was broken and had contacted the exhaust pipe causing it to melt.

Vehicle 2006 Toyota Tacoma with towing package factory installed. While loading a 450 lb motorcycle into the bed of a 2006 Toyota Tacoma, using a motorcycle ramp, the tailgate completely collapsed by bending into a U shape in the middle causing the motorcycle to come falling down and injury two persons that were loading the motorcycle. All weight limits were checked in the owner manual before loading and the same motorcycle had been loaded into 3 other trucks of same size before with no incidents. I believe that the tailgate of this particular vehicle is unsafe and someone could be seriously injured or death could have occurred in this situation.

The paint on the 2006 Tacoma with 5000 miles had numerous paint chips all over the body. The paint seemed extremely thin/low quality. The vehicle was driven approximately 35 miles/round trip to work and parked in a garage.
