My truck was brought in for a front end alignment and the mechanic brought to my attention that a frame cross member that carries a brake distribution block was rusted away and my brake lines were hanging. Also where my spare was attached was badly rusted. I then went to an auto body shop to inspect the frame. They said that the frame was badly rusted in many other areas that could lead to additional safety concerns. There was already an incident where my front tire fell to the ground when something attached to the frame broke. Updated 03/25/10 received pictures. Updated IVOQ 09/15/10

I am concerned about my 2000 Toyota Tundra. The frame has severe corrosion and there are actually pieces of the rear crossmember missing. The spare tire carrier under the rear of the vehicle came unattached about a year ago and the frame has gotten worse since then. I contacted Toyota and they have assigned a file number, however cannot tell me when or if anything will be done. I remember a few years ago when Ford recalled thousands of Explorer for a Firestone tire concern. This is a frame concern. Doesn't anyone realize the danger involved if these vehicles experience frame separation/failure while the vehicle is in motion? it will result in potential serious injury and possible fatality. I offered to send photographs to assist in their, (Toyota's) investigation. I was basically told that wasn't necessary. I will be taking the vehicle to a Toyota dealer for verification of this concern although it is pretty plain to see. As I said, there are pieces missing. Please help. I have a Toyota Tundra 2000 with approximately 90,000 miles. It is suffering massive frame rust, especially on the differential and weld points. The spare tire fell off unknown to us sometime last year (2009). The frame is a disaster in the making. Our mechanic is concerned at this rate it may be uninspectable in 1 to 2 years. Same problem as current action #PE09049. Frame member holding spare tire in 2000 Toyota Tundra rotted away. Spare tire appeared to be hanging low while truck was parked in the driveway. I went to investigate and when I shook tire to attempt to determine cause the spare tire came crashing to the ground, still attached to part of the frame. Brought truck to Toyota dealer the next day to further investigate and they notified me that the whole frame was rusted and in need of replacement, and unsafe to drive until that is done. Contacted Toyota's national office, and they advised me that at this time there is no action to be taken on the Tundra, but advised me that they had received many complaints on the same issue, and further explained that the same issue existed in earlier model year Tacoma. They explained that is currently under executive review and if any further action was taken in the future I would be notified. Truck is in otherwise very good shape, but is now unusable. I have a 2000 Toyota Tundra and it is rusted to the point where I cannot get a new inspection sticker. This past weekend I was driving and the spare tire was so badly rusted it broke loose from the mount and nearly caused me to crash as it jammed beneath my vehicle. It then bounced back and almost hit the car behind me. This was a very near miss! I have been fighting with Toyota to have them help me with this problem but they are doing nothing. I am hoping that they will do for us what they did for Tacoma owners. Updated 03/25/10 received pictures. Updated 09/15/10

I have been aware of problems with early model Toyota Tundra frame rust problems and have followed with interest Toyota's response [none]however, I feel obliged to inform you that on Friday 25th the gas tank straps failed while driving and the gas tank fell of the vehicle as luck would have it I was slowing down to make a turn so the consequences were limited. But, 30 seconds earlier at 55 mph this most likely would not have been a limited consequence situation. Updated IVOQ 06/30/10.

The contact owns a 2000 Toyota Tundra. The contact stated that upon routine inspection there was corrosion on the frame. If the frame should fracture while driving there is an increased risk for safety hazard. The manufacturer was contacted. Upon contact a representative stated the Tacoma was recalled, but that they would not provide assistance for the Tundra. He filed a formal complaint. An adjuster from the insurance company rendered the vehicle as completely destroyed. The failure and current mileages were 78,000. Updated 01/20/10 updated 01/22/10.

I own a 2000 Toyota Tundra and it has excessive rust and corrosion on the frame of vehicle. Body of the vehicle has no rust. Vehicle has always been maintained, in otherwise great shape. Local Toyota dealer indicated that nothing could be done and to contact Toyota headquarters. Contacted Toyota about the problem (4/08) and received a response that my corrosion warranty ran out 9/05 and they could not do anything for me. They indicated they logged the incident and that was it. Concern is that various important points of frame structure are rusting very bad. I.e. leaf spring supports, body mounts. This is my newest vehicle and by far has the worst rust. After Toyota indicated they could not help me I did try to paint and coat the frame for protection. This did not help and the problem persisted at the same rate with little evidence anything has ever been done to stop the issue. Updated IVOQ 11/03/1
