Tundra

Code 2440. Control valve stuck in air injection pump. Failed for the 2nd time upon startup. First failed at 68K miles early 2013. Toyota replaced it for free. They've had so many fail that they extended the warranty to 10 yr, 150K miles. Then it just failed again at 154K miles. They won't warranty the 2nd one because it's 4K miles out. Even though the part only has 86K miles on it. Cost is $2100 from the dealer! 1200 of that is just the parts. From what I've read this part is only required for the first couple minutes of operation on a cold start. It preheats the catalytic converter so it works better. The epa should be exempting minor discrepencies in their emissions laws while working with manufacturers to develop sensible solutions. In the meantime we get stuck with companies that do a shoddy job designing the system, place it in a terrible location requiring many hours to do the replacement, and then are bound by law (in my state) to maintain the equipment. The truck is in limp mode and is dangerous to drive.....guess I have to shell out the cash. After reading hundreds of complaints on multiple truck forums and experiencing the part to fail twice firsthand, it's obvious this is not an uncommon problem. The csr from Toyota acted like they did me a favor by "voluntarily" extending the warranty to 150K miles. No company "voluntarily" does this. I would like for you to consider having them issue a proper recall, exempting the affected make/model years from emissions standards for a failed system which would allow owners to bypass the system legally for about $150 in parts (harness & valve port blocking plates), or pressuring Toyota to extend warranty coverage to the part (not the truck) if it fails in the same way. A $2000+ fix on a non-essential component should not be a 75K mile recurring cost.

The contact owns a 2008 Toyota Tundra. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the accelerator pedal was depressed but the vehicle slowly accelerated and increased in rpms. The failure recurred on numerous occasions. The check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the secondary air injection valve needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired however, the failure recurred and the vehicle was taken back to the independent mechanic who diagnosed once again that the secondary air injection valve needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired however, the failure persisted. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 165,000. The VIN was unavailable.

2008 Toyota Tundra truck with 5.7L engine. Vehicle has a loud knocking noise that seems to be a valve train noise when truck is accelerating after slowing down, under load or towing a trailer. Took truck to the dealer multiple times so far, with feedback ranging from can't hear anything to this is a normal noise of the engine. I have read many postings online about this issue but dealer does not recognize the problem and insists condition is normal. This seems to be a poor design or poor quality that Toyota needs to address. I own several Toyota and it seems quality standards are really dropping lately. Perhaps it is time to move away from Toyota brand. This engine situation could be very dangerous issue if a part inside of the engine breaks off and cause the engine to shut down, leading to loss of braking and steering capabilities.

The bracket that holds the fan pulley catastrophically failed and broke away from the vehicle, cause the serpentine belt to give, causing the truck to loose power steering and crash into a road side ditch. This truck had parts replaced 6 months before the failure, and no problems were reported to owner.

Case # [xxx] ( filed with Toyota) on Jan 3rd while returning home from having brakes replaced on my 2008 Tundra my vehicle engine died on a busy 4 lane road with heavy traffic. I lost my ability to steer immediately. Fortunately I was in the right hand lane and was able to pull into a parking lot before I lost total momentum of the vehicle. I tried restarting and it would not. I checked all the indicaters and everything appeared normal. Fuel gauge registered 1/4 full which would equate to approximately 5-7 gallons. After exhausting all efforts to restart the truck I called for a tow truck. When the tow truck arrived I explained to him what was happening and he suggested it might be out of gas!!!...I showed him the fuel gage indicator showing the 1/4 level and he told me that his dad also had a Tundra and had experienced issues with the fuel tank float hanging giving false readings of what the actual fuel level was. He suggested we take the truck to the nearest gas station and put a few gallons in prior to taking the truck to the service department. Once we added some gasoline the truck started right up. I was shocked and upset for a number of reason. 1. I just paid a tow service $75 dollars for taking me down the road about a half block to a local convenient store to put gas in my truck. 2. I started realizing what a dangerous safety issue this is. I could have just as well been traveling down the highway at 70 miles per hour and have my engine just quit on me!! the ramifications of that are quite scary as to all the accident scenarios that could occur to include loss of life for not only the driver of the failed vehicle but those traveling close by as well. Was driving 08 Tundra up hill around 20 mph and cel vss lights came on lo range light flashing on dash truck lost all power. Found out code P2442 secondary air induction system failure put truck into limp mode thousands of dollars in just parts to repair this system. So many people having same problems with same vehicle. Toyota should issue a recall and re engineer a remedy for this poor design at no cost to the consumer. I spent alot of money on a truck to avoid these problems, now I have to drive an unsafe truck stuck in limp mode because I do not have the funds to repair, two thousand in just parts, Toyota is charging people 4 to five thousand dollars to repair this problem when it should be recalled at no cost to the consumer due to the poor engineering and faulty design on the secondary air induction system pumps and switching valves......I am very surprised and disappointed in Toyota for they have always backed up there product but this is a poor product that they are not backing up when they most certainly should stand behind it. Also this system should be redesigned to put on check engine light but should not put vehicle in limp mode it is a serious safety issue especially when trying to get on the highway etc..... also the cost and problems of this unneeded system is outrageous, all this system does is force air into the exhaust for the first couple of minutes of engine running at startup. I swore by Toyota for over twenty years, not any more, wish I got a Chevy.

When starting the Toyota Tundra the 4lo, vsr, check engine, lights lit up and the vehicle had no power it would 'nt run had to take the battery cable off to reset computer, it cleared the system then the same thing happen a week later took it in to the Toyota service shop and they couldn't find anything wrong with it. I am still having the same problem with the truck almost every other day called Toyota customer care and they told me that's its not covered under a recall. I found out the problem is the secondary air pumps and injection system and have also read that a lot of people are having the same problem.

Driving up a; hill all the sudden it loses power going U a hill all my dash light starts to blink check engine light 4 hi lo are blinking and starts to shake thru a P2442 code this is suppose to be a quality built truck for air injection pumps to be going out and after reading all the issues Toyota has had on the 07 and 08 you think they would put better parts in the trucks. After reading about this issue it is common anywhere from 11,000 to 60,000 miles this issue is a 1,700 out of pocket us doing this our self will never do business with Toyota after it breaking at 40,000 miles.
