Ford Truck Gear Shifters Can Detach From Steering Columns

Posted in Recalls

— Ford Super Duty truck gear shifters could fall off the steering columns, a problem that has caused a recall of nearly 12,000 trucks.

Recalled are certain 2025 Ford F-250, Ford F-350 and Ford F-450 Super Duty trucks with gear shifters attached to the steering columns. But the recall is necessary because the steering column assembly was built with misaligned welds attaching the shifter mechanism to the steering column.

"If the shifter mechanism detaches while the vehicle is not in park, the driver will be unable to engage park. In this case, the vehicle may roll if the parking brake is not manually applied, increasing the risk of a crash." — Ford

Ford learned about the steering column problem in February when a Super Duty steering column gear shifter detached from the steering column.

Two steering column warranty claims were also received showing the Ford truck gear shifter mechanisms detached from the steering columns when the trucks were parked and couldn't be shifted out of PARK.

The driver will receive audible warnings and a message indicating the Super Duty truck is not in PARK when they open the door or shut off the ignition. And if there is a physical key, the driver will notice the key cannot be removed from the ignition.

In addition, the instrument panel cluster will remain awake and the driver will receive these audible warnings and cluster message even if the truck is shut off.

Ford is not aware of any crash or injury reports.

Ford dealers will inspect the Super Duty steering column serial numbers and replace the steering columns if needed.

Ford truck steering column recall letters are expected to be mailed April 24, 2025.

Ford Super Duty owners may contact Ford at 866-436-7332 and ask about steering column recall number 25S20.
