Reverse gear went out of transmission with no warning.

I own a 2000 BMW 323 and my reverse just stopped working. I was in a parking lot that was busy and it just happened out of nowhere. There was no warning or build up just whamo it happened. It is very dangerous to lose reverse and is a costly repair. Bought a used 200 323I BMW with a steptronic transmission about a moth or two ago which would be in the time from of about may to June of 2008. It was in immaculate condition everything ran fine perfect well taken care of, drove to work one day tried to put my car in reverse and it just acted like it was in neutral. I have red a lot of complaints online about the same identical problem that everyone else is having with their 200 323 BMW's. I was referred here by a forum that had over a hundred complaints about my problem so I am sending one to you guys in hope of making a difference and helping push a recall for the 2000 323 BMW transmissions.

Reverse gear in my 2000 BMW 323I stopped working without warning. Vehicle had 80K miles on it and has been serviced regularly. Although BMW North America wouldn't acknowledge this was a widespread problem they did offer to pay for half but I was still out over $2K a few weeks before christmas. That was awesome.

I drove my car to the store and upon returning, I was unable to back out of the parking space. The car would not go in reverse. There was no warning or any problems whatsoever prior to this incident. Forward gears continue work fine. My car only has 79,900 miles on it and I have regular maintenance done. The BMW shop wants $5100-$5400 to repair the transmission. It appears that this is a common problem and the consumers have no recourse. This is my only vehicle and I purchased it because I thought BMW was a reputable maker. Please help.

2000 BMW 323it transmission reverse gear failed with no warning. There are hundreds and hundreds of complaints about this defect in BMW automobiles on internet chat rooms and newsgroups (search for "BMW transmission failure"). this failure is also well known by repair shops and owners groups. Owners have to replace the transmission at their own cost.

On 7/23/08 my 2000 BMW 323I with 78,000 miles in excellent condition refuse to move in reverse. I had a mechanic across the street from my office take a look at it and said the transmission needed to be replace. I have well maintained my car and was shocked that there were no problems leading up to this. It just refused to move. I did call BMW at the request of my mechanic to see what they could do for me without the warranty. I googled my information and was shocked to find that this was an ongoing problem with my year and make of the car....even some people put the date of purchase such as 7/2000 which was my exact date. Odd that there are so many 323I's with the same problem......won't move in reverse. The gentleman at BMW said he heard nothing of this problem and would do some research and get back to me. He did within the hour and said no such problem existed and told me it would cost me $5800 for a new transmission. There has to be some justice done here. These companies can not be supplying faulty materials and be expecting the consumer to pick up the tab because of their sloppiness. I feel very ripped off by BMW whom I have said numerous times that this is one of the best cars I have ever owned.......I now know they are not fair players. They should fess up to their mistakes.

2000 323I with 92000 miles on it. Backed into garage the night before, left for work next morning and stop at local store. Came out and it wouldn't go into reverse. It just sat there like it was in neutral. No recourse from BMW. Just like other owners of BMW transmission problems, we shouldn't have to front the cost of a defective transmission that BMW installed in there vehicles. There needs to be a directive coming from the feds to have BMW replace these transmissions at no cost the owners.

After checking with several friends and the BMW enthusiast website I have found this is a pervasive problem with this years model. Sudden failure of reverse gear in automatic transmission. The transmission in my 2000 BMW 323ci failed without warning while backing. The car has 93,000 miles on it. Apparently this is a well known problem (www.noreverse.org) that is being ignored by BMW.

After 105,000 miles, the my 2000 BMW 323I sports wagon all of a sudden - and without any warning - "lost" its reverse gear. The car was driven carefully and well-maintained. After researching the problem on the internet, I quickly learned that there are thousands or other consumers with year 2000 3-series BMW experiencing the same transmission problems. Having the transmission replaced by a BMW dealership costs more than $6,000. Apparently, a design flaw with the zf transmission (5hp19) is to blame for the loss of the rear gear, but BMW denies knowledge of a widespread transmission problem, nor do they take responsibility to have the faulty transmissions replaced - under whatever kind of warranty. Since I bought this car used 2.5 years ago, I have no chance to hold BMW or my dealership responsible, or -at least- negotiate a more acceptable resolution of the zf 5hp19 transmission problem.

I was finish fill up gas tank, the guy infront of me still pumping, so I engage the reverse gear to move back, then all of a sudden the car just sit there like it is on neutral; it lost its reverse gear. My transmission stopped working in reverse on my BMW 323ci which only has less than 68,000 miles. There were numerous complaints for the same problem. This should be recalled. I have never heard of a transmission failing so early.

Without any warning, my car would not go into reverse. It is a 2000 BMW 323I with only 77,000 miles on it. I did a search on the internet, and found out that there are dozens of other people who have had the same thing happen to them. This should be a recall item, the transmission just going out all of a sudden, but BMW doesn't agree. This is a dangerous situation, and they need to a do a recall, before someone gets hurt.
