I was driving on the freeway at 70mph, the indicated speed limit. It was cloudy, drizzling rain. No large vehicles near me. All of a sudden it sounded like a gunshot went off right above my head. I had the panoramic sunshade closed so I couldn't see anything, but my first thought was that the glass of the panoramic sunroof had shattered. After 5 more minutes of driving (so I could safely get home), I parked the car and stepped out of the door and looked at the roof. Sure enough, the front of the two pieces of glass had shattered right in the middle, about 150 square inches open to the sky, and dozens of pieces of broken glass had fallen in between the interior sunroof shade and where the glass was supposed to be. Thank goodness I had the shade closed, otherwise the pieces of glass would have landed on me and my girlfriend (who was sitting in the passenger seat.) There was no hail, no lightning, and no loose rocks from any vehicles in front of me. It was about 82 degrees Fahrenheit, so not abnormally warm.

I was driving down interstate 95 in NJ during inclement, cold weather. Other cars and trucks on the road were kicking up snow, salt and sand which was collecting on my front windshield. I tried to use my windshield washer fluid, but when I engaged it, no fluid came out and the windshield wipers spread the debris covering the entire windshield in a brown film which blocked 100% visibility. I was not able to see anything. I engaged the wipers on the fastest setting to try and get the film off, but for a period of 5 or 10 seconds, I was completely blind, driving on an interstate highway. I took my car to the open road BMW service center in morristown NJ to have it fixed. They told me there was nothing wrong and sent me home. In the 15 minute drive home, the washer fluid system stopped working again, so I took it back to open road. They again told me that nothing was wrong. However, two of their service representatives have individually told me that the issue is that the tank that holds the washer fluid is no insulated and located behind the right front wheel. So when driving on a highway, the wind generated by the wheel, especially in cold weather, freezes the washer fluid. This represents a significant, systematic safety issue with these cars that warrants a recall.

Glass sunroof exploded while driving on the highway at about 80mph. Glass shattered and fell onto me (driver), the passenger seat, console, and back seat. There were no other cars around me at the time, and there was no debris on the road. It was a clear day, on a clear road. I was driving straight, on a smooth stretch of highway, no bumps on the road, and the road was clear. Tiny shard of glass caused a minor cut on palm of hand, otherwise no injuries to report.

I've gone through 3 windshields in 2 months,2 through my insurance and the 3rd through BMW, early morning and late afternoon the windshield is covered with tiny sparkles, this was noticed by me the next day on all 3, so it has nothing to do with road debri, on line there are many people complaining about this and no one knows what to do, it is a safety issue with the sun hitting it.
