328d Diesel

  • Automatic transmission
  • 123,000 miles

Traveling on a highway at 70 mph, the engine suddenly cut out. Luckily, we were preparing to exit onto a service road and were able to coast in idle mode into a parking lot. Car would not restart. Called for a tow and car would not shift out of park, and 5 hours later had to get another tow truck to pull the car up on skids.

It was towed to a shop where they wiped the computer, thinking that would get the car out of gear, and also losing all possible data. It was then towed to a BMW dealership/shop. They gave me an estimate of approximately $18,000 to replace the engine. Towed a third time to another shop for a third opinion. Engine was dead.

The car sat for 2.5 months until we decided to pay to replace, with a used engine. Mechanic was extremely curious, had never seen anything like this with a diesel engine. After getting the engine out, from what I understand, he found the timing chain guide broke, which was what destroyed the engine.
