Captiva

I had to get a mechanic to replace the chain in the engine. I also have many other issues with this vehicle . It does not hold oil correctly. The sensors in the car are not working appropriately. Noise complaint when the air is running, loud screeching. Everything has been checked, belts are fine, filters are changed. I have already paid a great deal to recover this car. Now I am having problems with it running. The car starts, but then it does not continue, it just dies. I was told by my mechanic that they have seen several issues with this car being a general motors car. Honestly there should be some type of recall by now.

I bought this car secondhand, one previous owner, 85,000 miles 1.5 years ago. Dealer provided a Carfax. No accidents or problems noted. I went to local GM dealer, had registration transferred to my name to receive recall notices. None on this problem. Overall has been a good car. On a long trip to visit family after Christmas (round trip 1100 miles), I noticed it sounded a little clattery. Check engine lite came on. Checked oil, it was 1 qt low. Added 1 qt premium synthetic all seemed fine. Check engine light went off.

Once home checked my service records, it was due for oil change. Was planning on getting oil change done when my pension check arrived this week. On the way to town, two miles from home, sitting at a stop light, it stalled. It restarted hard. Check engine light came on, I crossed the intersection and it again died. I was able to coast it into the right lane. No noise, no clatter, no warning. Would not restart. I called for a tow to a local repair shop.

Yesterday, they told me that it needs a new engine, as the timing chain failed. Estimated cost from $3500 for rebuilt to over $5000 new. It would seem that, if this is a common problem with this engine, Chevrolet would send a bulletin to their dealers recommending that ALL owners of autos with this engine be advised to have the timing chain replaced at or near 100,000 miles. Expensive as that is, it would be far cheaper than the bind I am in. I am retired, living on SS and a modest pension.
