While traveling on interstate I-75 at approx 75-78 mph with my car's cruise control set, I changed lanes to go around a slower vehicle at which time I was also coming up to a vehicle in the lane I switched to so when I tapped my brake pedal to release the cruise control it did not disengage, so I rapidly starting pushing the button on the end of the cruise control mechanism which did not slow me down either-I turned the button of on the cruise control it did not shut off! I got over into the slow lane to prepare to exit the X-way by literally standing on my brake pedal and I could only get it down to about 58 mph with my RPM's still at over 3000 when I exited I got the front end of the car to the shoulder I was going to fast still to properly place the car and I decided I needed to put it into neutral and shut it off, I missed neutral and went into reverse at 58-60 mph it jolted us backwards I quick reached down and put it back into drive and we flew forward and at that point I crammed the gear shift into park at 60 mph- my engine was roaring and you could smell nothing but burning. My father drove to where we were and since he is retired G.M. repair person he knew how to disconnect the cruise control cable and he had me follow him and said everything seemed ok- I now have gotten the car to team hodges Chevrolet where it was purchased for them to inspect and a report has been made to Chevrolet.
