I had the strap that holds the exhaust system up rust through. I had it replaced and now any bumps I hit the whole exhaust system hits underneath the frame and I am so worried it is going to fall off. I plan on calling a mechanic to look at it and hopefully it will be a cheap fix. It is driving me crazy! I have noticed whenever I see any Cavalier's around the 2003-they too have the exhaust systems hanging down. I have always had great luck with any Chevy's I have ever owned until now. The fuel pump went out on the highway in 2008 as we were driving back to Illinois to spend the holiday with family. I was so pissed!!!! We had to have it towed back 200 miles and I said just drop it off at the dealership because I am really mad.

Cavalier 2.2L I4

  • Automatic transmission
  • 124,000 miles

The hanger/j-hook or whatever it is that holds the exhaust piping to the rest of the car came loose and fell off right around the muffler area. I realized this when I would go over speed bumps, hit a pothole or pretty much any irregularity in the road. It would wobble around and smack against the underside of the car. Thinking this sound was the suspension, I tried putting some weight on the rear of the car when it was stationary and heard the sound coming from the muffler area. Turned out that the exhaust was wobbling around not attached to anything. I am going to secure it with a piece of wire until I can get it fixed properly.
