We purchased the car in Feb 2012. It had approximately 98K miles on it but we were told and shown the car-fax23, which indicated there had only been one owner, that the excessive miles had been highway miles from commuting to and from work daily and the dealership had records showing the car had been very well maintained with oil changes every 3-4k miles as well as any repairs the car had needed which had been nothing major. We have, for about a year and a half, put approximately 17K miles onto the car, the majority being just commuting to and from work which is less than 10 miles round trip, in a town with approximately 23,500 people. We have taken good care of the car, getting the oil changed every 3-4K miles as the previous owner had.
The only major expense we have incurred which really isn't major is fixing the alignment, purchasing tires and replacing a tire that the valve had to be replaced because the tire had a nail in it but we could not get the tire off to replace it without fixing this valve. We have more info on this from the place that did the work. This place has done all the maintenance on the car since we have had it except for the last oil change, which we had to take it to Valve-line, because it was time to change the oil and we didn't want to wait the few days it would take to get us in. They changed the oil, no problems were reported. But we went through the oil quickly and before we knew it, it was time for another change.
The car has an electrical monitor which tells you what percentage of life the oil has left. It was scheduled to go into the shop for an oil change on Saturday June 14, 2014, but the week before it started "ticking".....I immediately pulled over and checked the oil and it was low so I put in 2 quarts. That seemed to bring it up to normal so I drove home. The ticking continued but since no WARNING lights like the ENGINE light was going on, we didn't know there was a serious problem with the engine. On the night of June 12, 2014, my 18-year old daughter had the car and was driving to her boyfriend's house and the motor started making a louder, banging noise. She immediately pulled over as far off the road as she could, called us, and we had it towed to our mechanic, Cheshire Tire. They ran it through diagnostics and discovered the car had no oil in it, which seemed impossible since we had just had the oil changed at the end of March and I had put two quarts in less than a week before! They said something had "gone in the engine, so that the oil was bypassing the parts it needed to lubricate and we were just burning the oil until there was no more oil in the car at which time, something broke in the engine and it was not drivable and needs a new engine.
We know the engine was not brand new but we should NOT have had an engine that was deemed "working in good order" and maintained as well as we did, just "go" like that. That is our only car and we still have to pay $356 a month for it as well as insurance. And because it is our only car, we have had to rent a car, costing us an additional $255 a week!! - just so we can get to our jobs!! We do not live in a town where there is a bus system and I work 40 miles from my home, which is a job that started 6 days before the engine went so the problem existed in the engine Before my job began!!
A Chevy is supposed to be "American made", "durable", "made well" because it's an American company......this engine had to be faulty for it to break like that! We are not asking off a brand new engine. We are not even asking to be reimbursed for the $1000+ we have paid to rent a car! though that would be nice. We do not have credit cards. We live on cash - yes, very un-American, but we prefer not to have 25 credit cards like the average American! We would like a used engine put in the car (our mechanic has found several that all come with one year warranties) as well as the labor and cost to tow the car. We are asking for the entire bill - approximately $2700 be covered by Chevy for this faulty engine that should have allowed us to get more than 115K miles on it, ESPECIALLY since if was so well maintained !!!!
