Equinox LS 2.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 28,000 miles

We bought a 2013 Chevy Equinox LS 2.4 L 4 Cyl in May 2013. We have noticed an excessive amount of oil use. The last 2 times we checked the dipstick showed no oil. We maintain all of our vehicles through the dealership. After reading this web site, I see other have had the same issue. When we took the Equinox back to the dealer in July @ 28000 miles,. we had to add 2 qts to get there safely. We took it back 1000 miles later, dealer said it was fine but they are aware there is an issue with some of the Equinox's. Today, we checked the oil. Completely empty once again after going 4000 miles.

Equinox LT

  • Automatic transmission
  • 70,000 miles

Since purchasing my vehicle I have always had it serviced on time. Recently it started consuming oil to the point where there was almost none. My vehicle uses synthetic oil. There is no oil leak, yet after having it changed not even a month later the oil is nearly gone. Getting my oil changed is not cheap and having this issue is starting to be an issue.

Equinox 2.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 98,540 miles

After two valve jobs at 16,000 and 83,000 miles I am at the end of my warranty (98,540 miles) and have no oil showing on my dipstick after 3,000 miles on an oil change. The dealer who did the last job in Az. said they would need to do pistons and rings if it did it again. I have put so many miles on from "oil consumption" tests that I am very frustrated and will be heading to the Oregon dealer Monday morning--in hopes they will not have to do another oil consumption test--this has gotten to be rididulous. I will be contacting Chevrolet if that is the case. To be continued...

Equinox 2.4L V4

  • Automatic transmission
  • 29,000 miles

I took my truck to the dealer due to a loud engine noise and sluggish movement between gears. Had to have my oil change. They said I was almost 3 quarts of oil short. Luckily no engine damaged!!! They told me this is normal for my truck to burn oil every 1000 miles due to the high friction of running this 4 cylinder type of engine. This is not normal. This is unacceptable to have to check my oil all the time to see if I'm short. Also, oil light indicator light NEVER came on. In summary, Very bad job Chevy!!

A few times we had a mechanic review and check why we had over consumption of oil use, but never found a problem. We have to carry oil at all times which is very annoying, especially when synthetic oil is very expensive.

Equinox LT 2.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 30,000 miles

I have a 2013 Chevy Equinox. Right now it has 52k miles. Have had issues with the oil consumption. GM knows there is a problem with this. From what I found, it says they need to replace the pistons and rings. My dealer keeps telling me all GM cars take 1 gal oil per 2k miles..this is not acceptable! My car almost had no oil over a year ago, with no warning.. dealer did oil test.. sup passed at less than 36k miles..after test it happened again. This is ridiculous. I am def trying to get ahold of GM. Love the car otherwise. But won't buy a GM again.

Equinox LS 2.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 63,300 miles

Well....I'm glad I didn't blow up the engine, since it didn't have a drop of oil in it. I bought the car a little over a year ago. I always had the oil changed at the dealership every 5,000 miles. A few days ago I started hearing a rattling. I thought at first I filled it up with bad gas but the noise was getting louder. I never would have thought it was an issue with the oil.

Equinox LS

  • Automatic transmission
  • 42,554 miles

So I bought the Equinox March 2013. In 2015, I had to take the car in for rust on the lower driver side door and starting to rust on back hatch, but I that is not this issue. I take the car for oil changes as prescribed. So earlier this year just before my oil change the car is running rough and there starts this clanking noise. So I go in to the dealership to get the oil change and I ask them to check the noise. So they come back to tell me that I was so low on oil that my timing change was making the noise. I said that is not good. So they tell me to come back in 1000 miles to have an "Oil Consumption" test. So I past the 1000 miles and go in about 1400 miles and the said that I was 1 1/2 quarts low. "Not bad" says the service person and I said "Not bad??!?!? I have never had this issue with any other cars. HE tells me that it is only 1/2 over what it should be using as 1 quart per 1000 miles. I am like what?!??! So tells me to come back in another 1000 miles which I do and NOW it is perfectly fine. Well they had told my husband they have to have at least 3 bad test to fix the problem. WOW isn't that a coincidence. NEVER BUYING ANOTHER CHEVROLET ESPECIALLY FROM DICK WICKSTROM CHevrolet in ROSELLE< IL

Equinox 2.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 15,534 miles

I am so lucky to see this website!!! I have no problem taking the time to sign up and rant b/c it saved me $12500.... Please believe this is a real complaint, I was skeptical at first until people started explaining the exact same problem as I had....

I have never owned an SUV before so I wasn't sure what was normal for oil consumption! The BS that I was told at Chevy will ensure I never purchase one. I had an Equinox provided for me at a sales job for a company called Covidien.. At the end of three years you have the opportunity to buy out the lease! I almost bought it for $12500 until I saw others had the same problems with there SUV and were given the same poor service!

The car was requiring 1-2quarts of oil every 1000km. Initially I was unaware to the issue until my car started occasionally jerking and stalling. I was asked to do some type of bogus consumption report when I complained during an oil change. Chevy denied the need to address the issue and said it was typical and normal consumption! what a crock. I am glad I got a new job and a new car. I have an old 2003 solar that was in better shape!!

Beware you all and thank you for all that take the time

Thank you to all who take the time! I'll look into buying something else!

Equinox AWD 2.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 125,545 miles

Since purchasing the Equinox i have kept a constant check on the oil level. i have owned the vehicle since 02/26/16 and have had to add oil a quart at a time until the last time about a week ago,I had to add about 2 quarts of oil. When i started the vehicle it sounded like a diesel engine i shut it off immediately and checked the oil. It was barely on the dipstick. This most recent event made a total of five quarts of oil i have added since owning the vehicle. The computer information indicates that there is just under 30% of "oil Life" left. I have an oil/filter change scheduled. i have driven approximately 2500 miles since i purchased it. Even when the oil is at the proper level at times the engine has some roller sound to itt at start up.

Equinox LTZ 2.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 22,900 miles

So it looks like I am in the same boat as many others on here. At 22,900 miles. Malfuntion indicator light came on and checked oil which is down. Dealer said if it registered any oil on the stick at all it is no more than a quart down. I am about 3K miles into the oil change. They scheduled an oil consumption test, just like they make everyone do and will probably say it is normal to go through a quart of oil every oil change. The vehicle is also"hiccupping" right after starting. But my niece who owns a 2011 with 60k on hers just had the same issue and they did a complete engine overhaul.

Sooo disappointing to have owned this car for only 4 weeks and have it burn through 3 quarts of oil in that time... only to find all the complaints on these forums and to learn that Chevy knows about this issue. We are just starting this battle but good to be armed with the knowledge available here on this site and others. I sure hope we can get it resolved because we absolutely love the car... Chevy better play this straight with us. We have an appointment at the dealership on Monday.

Engine leaking oil, rear doors rusting, door seal ripped. I will never buy a GM again. Traded it for a new car. They said they fixed the oil leak, 2 times. Still leaking. They will not rebuild it. Why was this problem not recalled? Mexico built bad, cheap gaskets.

Equinox LT 2.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 22,838 miles

2013 Chevy Equinox was a good vehicle until @ 20,000 miles, when one day when I checked oil found it quart & 1/2 low. Filled it up, called Chevy dealership. They stated to bring truck in for "Oil consumption test" for 3 visits at 1000 mile intervals. I did so & every visit the truck was 1/2 quart low every 1,000 miles with no leaks ever found. At last visit, Chevy dealership stated that it is normal for vehicle to burn 1/2 qt of oil every 1000 miles so for 5K oil change interval - This two year old vehicle with 25K miles now burns 2.5 Quarts or HALF of it's oil capacity & THAT'S NORMAL/OK PER CHEVY ??? On top of that paying $40-50$ for oil change & then having to buy 3 QTS of DEXOS oil at $10 each is very disturbing as well.

Have made some complaints on Chevy/GM's website but so far they are ignoring me & providing no resolution.

So buyer beware - stay away from purchasing Chevy Equinox with 2.4 L 4 cylinder - there are many complaints online regarding this Chevy 2.4 L engine.

Equinox LS

  • Automatic transmission
  • 40,000 miles

After my Equinox reached 20,000 miles, it started to use oil excessively. At first, I didn't know what was going on. The motor would make knocking sounds and vibrate excessively---I decided to change the oil and found that after 2,000 miles since the last oil change, the motor had used over 2 quarts of oil Now, I need to change the oil every 2,000 miles. I brought the car to the dealer and they wanted to do an oil consumption test...what a joke. Chevrolet is no longer a quality product....after having a car for little over a year, I have a piece of crap motor and 4 1/2 years of payments!

Equinox LT 3.2L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 23,000 miles

The vehicle worked fine for almost 2 years, over 18000 miles. Now every 3000 mile oil change will be at least 3 to 4 quarts low and we don't even get an idiot lite to warn us of low oil, we'll hear the motor knocking. Now we know that there's motor damage.

We have appointment with dealer but already getting frustrated because they want us to do an oil change then we have to check oil every time we fill gas tank, keep notes, so they can determine if there's a problem. lol. My whole life I never had to add oil to any vehicle I owned before an oil change and even then it used less the a quart. I've gone over 8000 miles, never used a drop of oil, no motor should need a quart of oil in 5000 miles. I will do everything in my power on Internet/web to let people know about the Chevrolet Equinox. Oh, there are many complaints on the Internet about oil consumption in the the 2010 models and up to 2014 so tell your friends relatives neighbors and all else about Chevrolet.

Equinox LS AWD 4 cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 20,000 miles

3 quarts of oil low at 20,000 miles?!?! How does that even happen? New pistons and its back in the shop as we speak.

Update from Jun 6, 2014: It started with my car surging at stops. I got it checked out to find I was 3 quarts of oil low and needed new pistons. My main question was when was light going to come on to tell me to service the engine. That was replaced and it still was acting up.

I took it back in to get serviced and then I had fuel in my oil. They said it was my manual fuel pump. They fixed that but it's still acting up!

I went to get my oil changed and apparently I was 1 quart of oil low again! They keep telling me to come back in 1,000 miles to get it checked. The car only has 26,000 miles and I am having way too many problems.

What to do is my worry... Trading it in make life terrible for the next innocent person which isn't right at ALL!!

I am in the process of trying to lemon law it but GM just low balled me! I am so frustrated with this whole situation its unreal & would NOT recommend GM to anyone. It continues to surge but its not throwing any codes for the dealership to read so I am told to bring it back when it does it more.
