problem #3

Monte Carlo 6-cyl Diesel

  • Automatic transmission
  • 44,500 miles
Sealed beam headlight assemblies gradual internal moisture build-up till condensation on the lenses get trapped on inside surface causing diffusing and diminishing front headlight transmission. Internal moisture that builds up over time and exposure to rain cannot be removed. Adds to risk of corrosion, electrical short, explosive pressure build-up when heated through use and total failure of headlight assemblies. Only remedy is model wide recall for safety inspection and replacement including inspection advisory to owner warning of potential problem and safety hazard. Manufacturer is reluctant to issue a recall due to the high cost of replacement headlight assemblies of over $250 each.

The contact owns a 2002 Chevrolet Monte Carlo. While driving 55 mph at night, the headlights dimmed. The contact activated the dimmer switch and the lights illuminated. However, 40 miles later, the failure recurred. There were no warning lights, indicators, or noises present. The vehicle was taken to a dealer, but was not inspected. The contact showed the dealer NHTSA action number PE06017 (exterior lighting, exterior lighting:headlights, exterior lighting:headlights:switch). The dealer stated that the action number was for the Chevrolet Impala. The vehicle has not been repaired. The current and failure mileages were 76,000.
