Silverado 1500HD 6.0L V8

  • Automatic transmission
  • 80,778 miles

Going down the highway the oil pressure gauge started to swing low to high and back at random. Initially i thought the oil pump was shot and pulled over. Engine did not heat up or sound weird. I took it easy going home. Mechanic friend suggested I replace the oil pressure transmitter first since it is an easy fix. Got one at the local GM dealer for CAD$100 and replaced it in about 20min. The old one that came out was all covered in black gunk and what seems to be varnish. Yes, this truck got its 5000km oil changes always. Apparently the location on the engine makes this sensor prone to clogging - it uses a small orifice to measure the pressure. My mechanic suggested using Seafoam every other oil change to keep the inside of the engine clean. Have not done this yet.
