problem #14

Dec 102005

Suburban 4WD 8-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 98,342 miles
I was driving on a two-lane road at about 30 mph when a sudden vibration occurred from the right front of the vehicle. I found that when I tapped the brakes the vibration would stop for a short time before recurring. I then noticed a severe decrease of braking efficiency. After I took the vehicle to the repair shop I was told that the right front brake disk had broken--and the "hat" part of the casting had separated from the disk part--resulting in the vibration and loss of braking power.

1999 Chevrolet Suburban. As of 4/28/04 with only 47K miles, A/C compressor defective & dealer will not replace in spite of several attempts to repair before warranty expired, as soon as 3 months after purchase in October of 2002. Replaced brakes 3 times at our expense. Dealer (bob neill Pontiac in winston-salem, nc refused to repair under warranty), steering problems, attempted repair, again at our expense. Replaced door locks and window mechanism's at our cost. Total piece of junk. Will never buy from bob neill Pontiac in winston-salem, nc again & will never buy another GM product. Just bought entire fleet (6 trucks) from Chevy. Dealer N kernersville, nc). Waiting with baited breath for the entire lot to break down. Completely disgusted with GM.

We have returned our Suburban three times already for brake problems. The first at about 13K miles one rotor was replace because it was warped and the other was cut. At about 23K miles both rotors were found to be warped and replaced. Now at 30K miles the rotor were found to be warped and they were cut. Unpon bringing the Suburban home from the dealer the brakes almost failed completly. Takes four times the normal distance to stop. The next problem is a valve tap that has been there since the first day of ownership. There is a tremendous amount of valve tapping when the vehicle is first started it lasted about 15 to 20 second. It was return 2 or 3 times to the dealer before they admitted hearing it, then the response was it was normal. There has been a valve tap that has been there from the beginning even after the vehicle has reached operatiing temp. Every time it was brought back in for warranty work the valve tap was mentioned. No one can never hear it. At 30K miles they think they hear it now and the fix for a mechanical lifter noise is programming I am being told. My concern is the warranty runs out in 6K miles and the motor has had this problem from the first day. What is a person to do?

When applying brakes at highway speed, the front brakes will create a violent vibration due to defective rotors that cannot withstand heat generated by brakes, causing rotors to warp. Manufacturer has issued tsb.
