Suburban LTZ 5.3L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 133,000 miles

I love my suburban. I have had several over the years, all Z71's. I'm a fanatic about having it serviced. I purchased it with 80,000 miles. At about 100K miles, I noticed it was burning enough oil that I would have to run by my oil change place to top it off with at least a quart or so. At 130,000 miles or so the engine light came on, and was told by dealer that it was an issue on the right bank of the exhaust system. It was reset and I started using Marvel's Mystery oil. Seemed to work for a while, but then the light came back on. Now the problem is a misfire from #2 cylinder. My mechanic is a buddy of mine and said with all issues GM has had with these engines, the best fix would be a replacement engine from Jasper Engines. The total estimate is $3500. I'm trying to wait it out, but I believe I will be replacing it in the near future. By the way, I have always used Maxlife and I currently have 168,000 miles. I'm participating in this forum hoping GM will offer some better assistance than what I have read to this point. Come on GM, show some love.

Suburban LTZ 5.3L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 180,000 miles

I purchased this vehicle used in November 2014 from a Nationally known car re seller. I had the car fax report among other documents but never saw anything related to the 2008 engine issues.

The last week of October 2016 I'm driving normally, and bang out of know where, the check engine, traction control and suspension lights come on. At the same time the car starts running roughly and creates a knocking sound.

I take it to my local mechanic, (who formally worked at the local Chevrolet dealership for many years), and was given the bad news! The engine computer reported misfires, and after removing the valve cover discovered the #1 rod isn't even moving. He did research and found this was a common problem for the 2008 5.3L engine, and advised replacing it. Outraged, I had no other choice but to have the work done!! $9,000 later and my own web search my blood pressure is through the roof, as I can't believe the number of the same problems, with no acknowledgement from GM!!

Also, I'm equally frustrated with the re-seller (Carmax) and the famous car fax report as this was a known issue at the time I bought this vehicle.

I'm not sure if there is anything I can do to help recover this enormous cost, but I'm open for suggestions if anyone else knows a contact at GM, or if there is any class action litigation regarding this problem.

  • 82,330 miles

Check engine "on" along with service stability. Have replace the coil and problem still there.Yesterday replace spark plug and fuel injector. This morning drove to store and problem has not being resolved. Try isolating issue by moving coil to different cylinder and no luck.

Suburban LT 5.3L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 113,000 miles

Purchased this vehicle with 83K miles on it. Immediately had to replace the head gasket. Discovered later that the 5.3L Chevy engine is problematic (a.k.a., a lemon). Recently the oil pressure light came on. Immediately added two quarts of oil but engine started running rough, or "fluttering," shortly thereafter. Knowledgeable mechanic said the engine is shot and needs to be replaced. Quoted a ballpark of $4,000. Chevrolet still denies there are comprehensive issues with this engine, and all costs to repair have been out-of-pocket.
