gas gauge drops to zero fuel at 1/4 tank

While driving, the gas gauge will go down normally until it hits 1/4 tank and then the needle drops all the way down. I know I still have gas but it reads like I don't and the fuel light comes on. I've still driven several times for many miles with the light on. When I put more gas in it it goes bk up to normal. For some reason it's only when it gets the the 1/4 mark is when it drops. I heard it may be the sending unit that is going bad but haven't had a definite answer yet.
