Town & Country Limited 3.8L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 153,798 miles

I had the transmission replaced in April 2012. I inherited the van from my dad, it is 4WD & I knew he had used it to tow a small trailer. Mileage @ that time: 120000. At that time there were symptoms I could identify, so I knew it needed to happen. Naturally there was a 3 yr warranty on repairs-do the math, it just expired 2 months ago. This time, no symptoms, no warning, driving @ freeway speeds-no changing of gears, it just stopped. I am EXTREMELY fortunate that it was early a.m. so traffic was lighter than usual & that I was able to coast to an off-ramp. When I stopped, I confidently expected to be able to put it in low gear or reverse & have it drop in so I could move to a more secure location-no dice.

I was driving off the highway when suddenly my car stopped on the ramp going uphill and would not move. I tried putting it in park and it wouldn't stay in park. I had my hazards on and had to keep my foot on the break or it rolled backwards. An 18 wheeler came flying down the ramp almost hitting me because I was stuck. I had no warning no nothing that would indicate a transmission failure.

I have to find another job within walking distance because I dont have a way to get to work now. On top of that I am 3 weeks away from moving to another state so I have to get this fixed before then. There should be a recall for this. What of this would have happened to me on the highway?

  • Automatic transmission
  • 80,000 miles

Transmission in this piece of $hit has failed twice, right around 80,000 miles apart from each other. The only solution is a rebuild which can range anywhere from 2,500 dollars to 4,000 dollars. Extra care and preventative maintenance don't seem to help here. The transmissions showed no signs at all of failing, they just did as I took off from a red light and stop sign. The car would then not accelerate, nearly causing a crash. Car then had to be towed as no gear would work. This issue deserves a recall as this is a huge safety hazard that in some cases, could lead to the death of the driver should it fail on an interstate.

At 19,837 miles we had to have the compressor replaced on the air conditioning and the power window went out so we had to have a new motor switch installed.

At 35,000 the power sliding door motor assembly had to be replaced as the door quit working. At this time we informed Chrysler that the transmission appeared to be slipping when we would accelerate from a stopped position. They informed us that they could not diagnose any problem

At 42,000 we had a bad steering gear replaced and they also replaced the fluid. Again the air conditioner would not blow cold air so they replaced the evaporation tube where they said they had found a water leak. They also had to replace the sway bar links on the suspension at this time.

At 48,000 the windshield wipers became inoperable and the rear door quit working. They tightened the windshield wipers and replaced the latch on the rear door and shimmed it.

At 69,000 we reported that the transmission was indeed slipping, so they performed a "quick learn and a transmission service." They also replaced the BELR in the air conditioning unit as they said it was glazed over. The wipers also would not work again so they repaired those.

At 81,000 the transmission went out completely and had to be replaced. They would not honor the warranty even though we had taken it in twice complaining of the transmission problems when it was still under warranty, so we paid to have the transmission replaced. At this time, I was led to believe that because it went out so close to the warranty mileage that the new warranty on the transmission would be 7 years/ or 75,000 miles, the same as the first warranty on the transmission.

Chrysler acted like they might help and delayed the decision for 2 weeks. Now my van is 250 miles from home and I have to find a way to sell if for scrap. I'm done with Chrysler. After asking for an explanation for their decision, I have not heard back from them at all. Can't believe that they just posted an 80% increase in profits over the last quarter.

Town & Country Limited 3.6L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 148,312 miles

Purchased a new, show room floor, Chrysler T&C Limited in July 2001 for $36,000. Started having numerous things go out, such as door/window regulators, power lift gate, several electronic modules, etc. First transmission went out at 148,312 miles, cost $3548., call it trans #2. Second transmission went out at 191,299 miles, call it trans #3. Now driving on trans #4 for 50,870 miles. We actually thought we were buying the best mini-van ever made, with its rating and ride but since all the transmission failures, a myriad of problems have developed. Have replaced all the fuel injectors, fuel pump, cam sensor and cam module and the list goes on...

I think we reached a point of no return when in July 2011 our Van was diagnosed with a total engine wiring harness failure, cost to repair $3600. The caveat is that Chrysler quit manufacturing the harness and there are currently none available in the country, thus rendering our vehicle to salvage value. We understand that the Chrysler Corporation quit making the wiring harness because they never go bad, unless in a total engine fire. We have had no engine fire. Our Van is totally inoperable as of July.To wrap this up we have spent countless hours on the phone with dealers and Chrysler Corporate to come to some resolve. Finally our 5 page documentation letter to Chrysler did not even deserve a reply as we have received none. Wow, customer care not high on their "to do" list.

Needless to say Chrysler Corporation has lost a customer for life and 2 or 3 generations of offspring that I have convinced to stay away from their products. Shame on you Chrysler, looks like profit is paramount to customer service.

My mechanic told me that these transmissions do break well before 100K miles to be careful. Actually he advised me to complain to Chrysler about it well before it is time to get out of warranty so I would get another one. It seems that they were built to barely survive the factory warranty. I've learned my lesson: another one to add to the do not buy list, right next to Hyundai and GM. It was funny since When I walked in the shop another Chrysler was in with the same problem. Fixing it is about $3500. Might as well scrap the whole vehicle. Not worth fixing it anymore... Disgusting

sounds like chrysler had a little problem getting transmissions right. never had any sign that it was going to break. sitting at a red light, turned green and tried to take of it wouldnt move. It started to move at about a babys crawl and I almost got hit by a semi

trying to turn. I would try and trade it in but I owe way more than it is worth. Ive owned it about 8 mths and have had more problems than just this. They dont even have a catagorie for a few. Town and countrys are junk. BUY AT YOUR OWN RISK!

I have no confidence left with Chrysler Corp. nor with my vehicle. This is just one of many various failures I have experienced with THIS vehicle which I purchased new in 2001 and have had problems since year 1. 6 years old, and only 71,000 miles on it, and the transmission completely quits. It left my family of 4, including a small child in the middle of the freeway, in 20 degree weather, on a Sunday at 10:30pm. Not only that, but it cost $250 for the tow truck and storage for overnight, $250 to tow the van home until repairs could be done, plus $3222 for a new transmission (refurbished transmission would have cost about $200 less with only one year warranty).

At about 75000 miles, the transmission quit completely without any prior symptoms, leaving my family & I stranded for 2.5 hours

until the tow truck arrived. I had followed all manufacturer's recommendations for maintenance services and had taken the car only to the Chrysler dealer for services. The dealership mechanics have no idea why the transmission has failed so catastrophically. This leaves me to believe that the cause of failure is a design flaw. I have lost confidence in the reliability of Chrysler cars and will not buy a Chrysler/Dodge again.

Our Town and Country minivan had 74000 miles on it when the transmission went out. The mechanic has put three transmissions on the van and they keep breaking down. It can't be the transmissions that are bad, the inept mechanic is putting it in wrong somehow. The mechanic has had the van for a total of almost 2 months trying to fix it. We are in the process now of seeking legal advice to see what action we can take. This is by far the worst car experience I have ever had the misfortune of having. That great Daimler Chrysler company would not honor our warranty because we were 4000 miles over the warranty. I would never do business with that company again. They couldn't give me a car.
