We were traveling to Illinois when with out warning the car downshifted and went 55m/hr at 5000 rpm instead of 70m/hr at 2000 rpm. Incident occurred 7/22/2023. We were on the tollway coming in to Rockford Illinois at the beginning of rush hour. The mechanic found that the transmission had failed at 47,190 miles on the car. Of course the auto was out of warranty. 2015 Chrysler Town and Country Touring Van 5y or 60,000 mi on the powertrain. This could have been a very dangerous situation with the car accelerating and decelerating as we drove. The interesting thing is the certified transmission mechanic told us this was the 4th van he has seen in the last 2 weeks with the same issue. The transmission fluid was full of metal shards, now this does not seem right on an auto with only 47,190 miles on it There is documentation attached with the component data as per the computer record.

Halfway through a nearly 1000 mile trip from my home to Panama City Beach, FL, I noticed a noise slowly getting louder from the vehicle as the trip progressed. About 100 miles out from our destination, I noticed gears started slipping and the check engine light came on. Luckily, we did get to our destination and an Auto Service Center. From the attached invoice, we now know the "front transmission pump has low pressure starving transmission for fluid damaging transmission internally." This required us to replace the transmission, which was a nearly $6500 repair. It turns out, Chrysler recalled other 2015 Town and County vans for this exact same reason (recall number is 16V461000 and Chrysler's number is S44). However, my VIN was NOT a part of this recall. According to this recall description, "If the transmission loses hydraulic pressure, the vehicle may lose motive power, increasing the risk of a crash." The fact that my vehicle was not recalled but had the same issue as other vehicles that were recalled should warrant an investigation. I now know my family's safety was unknowingly at risk. I will also give this information directly to Chrysler.

  • 135,000 miles
The contact owns a 2015 Chrysler Town and Country. The contact stated while driving approximately 50 MPH, the transmission inadvertently downshifted to first gear, causing the RPM-€™s to rev to 6,000 RPM. There were unknown warning lights illuminated. The contact pulled off the roadway and turned off and restarted the vehicle several times before the transmission regained normal functionality. The contact stated that the failure became constant. Additionally, the manual shifting and sports modes were inoperable. The contact drove the vehicle to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the transmission pump had failed, and the transmission was damaged and needed to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired. The contact researched online and related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 16V461000 (Power Train). The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 135,000.

Similar to NHTSA Campaign ID: 16V461000 While driving the van at highway speed, there was a sudden failure of the automatic transmission leading to lack of fwd/reverse motion control. Fortunately, this incident did not result in a crash; driver was able to coast to shoulder with hazard lights on. No warning lights appeared on the instrument cluster. Vehicle had to be towed away from scene. Vehicle is at Chrysler dealer who suspects hyd pump failure leading to transmission failure similar to above campaign. This van was manufactured in Nov 2014 (as a 2015) model and was not part of the OEM recall.

While driving the transmission started to make a loud whistling sound and would not change gears appropriately. At 5-6 thousand RPMs the vehicle would jam into the appreciate gear and cause the car to abruptly lurch forward and shudder. Upon examination of the transmission fluid, it was black and smelled burnt, and contained bits of metal. No previous OBD codes or engine lights identified any issues. After driving an additional 5 miles the vehicle would not accelerate or engage into drive (any gear) or reverse.

Last month when driving my van started to stall when driving came to a stop at a light and the engine jerked, light turned green started to drive and it wouldn't go over 30 then all of a sudden it speeded up and the started making a weird sound pulled, off into a parking lot wasn't able to get it all the way in a parking spot. Called to have it towed. The transmission blew and it only has 65,000 miles. That cost me alot to get a transmission. Now the seatbelt on drivers side will not lock into place. Which I don't know what to do with that because you have to wear a seatbelt. When I bought this van brand new I had a lot of electrical issues kept taking it to the dealer they could never find anything. Lights would dim when driving, they was suppose to hook a machine up to it and it would register what was going on, this was requested by Chrysler when I couldn't get anywhere with the dealer ship. Chrysler set it up I go to the dealer and they don't have that equipment so they said they couldn't do anything, called Chrysler back told them was suppose to hear from someone never did. I feel this van is a death trap. The side doors act like they don't want to close at times. I have kept up on regular maintenance on the van. I just feel that when you pay $30,000 for a vehicle and take care of it things should last longer. I know it's 7 years old but low mileage and taken care of.

When I accelerate, the vehicle jumps, as if the transmission is slipping. It seems like it does it when it needs to change gears. There aren-€™t any lights on to indicate anything is wrong, however, this problem is consistent and I-€™m scared the vehicle will leave my small children and I on the side of the road

The contact owns a 2015 Chrysler Town and Country. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, a whining sound came from the transmission. Additionally, while depressing the accelerator pedal, the RPM would increase however, the vehicle would not respond as intended. The vehicle was taken to the local mechanic who diagnosed that the transmission pump was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet been repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and informed that the VIN was not included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 16V461000 (Power Train). The contact indicated that the vehicle had experienced a failure with the recall. The failure mileage was 80,000. The consumer stated that at the time of failure, they were driving approximately 20-40 mph while in traffic. Also, the transmission was replaced about two weeks after the incident and the vehicle is working properly.

While driving, the van would rev up to almost 600 rpm & wasn't stopping and then the thermal light or a red light came on. We eventually got to the next exit & thought maybe it was the coolant, though we had checked it previously. It did have antifreeze in it, also, the temperature gage was not high or showing it was overheating either. After checking, we started on the road again, and the engine light was flashing and the van started to rev then lose power while we were driving on the highway it was quite scary. The thermal light was on and the engine light was flashing. We had to pull over due to the issue since it was no longer safe to drive. We ended up getting it towed & we were several hours from home. Our mechanic said he's seen this issues with the transmission on Chryslers town & country before. We can provide the Mechanic receipts to assist with support on this. We've already had to pay for a rebuilt transmission to be put in and truly shouldn't have to pay for a 20k vehicle to be fixes with less than 135k miles on it when it is well taken care of.

We went out of town on vacation and transmission went out and vehicle would die out. It would not shift past 1st. We where scared my family and I, that we would not make it back to our state. We did not know this would be this unsafe and unable to leave our town. Let alone drive it. Please help

Driving at 30 mph with no issue stopped at a four-way crossing. As we were starting to move across intersection the van shifted then completely lost all forward motion with no warning like it was stuck in neutral. No warning lights came on until after power train lost all power. No accident occurred but lost all forward motion. Mechanic shop says powertrain will have to be replaced. Dealership never mentioned an issue with powertrain on last visit to them for ofluid change. Did not know of recall but not sure if van is on recall list due to it sitting at the mechanic shop.
