Voyager 6-cyl

  • 46,000 miles
The contact owns a 2002 Chrysler Voyager. The contact stated that the air bag light illuminated intermittently, but now remains lit. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and they stated that the passenger side sensor switch was defective. The mechanic also stated that the air bags were interconnected, which means when one is not working, the other also does not work. The entire air bag unit needs to be replaced. The vehicle will be taken to the dealer in a couple of weeks for the repair. The current mileage was 48,200 and failure mileage was 46,000.

I have 2 issues with my 2002 Chrysler Voyager. The first is the air bag light flashes on and off. I took it in for service and informed them that I was aware of the recalls on the early models. They said that it was not under recall and that was not the problem. They said it was fixed and on my way home from the dealer it started again. I took it back the next day and they told me that it was what I suspected but it would cost me more money.(now mind you I had told them what I thought the problem was). Therefore it is not fixed and I was told that as long as the airbag light was off it would deploy if it is on it will not. The second issue is the rust! there is a huge rust spot on the rear hatch and more bubbles forming. The hood is rusting also!

The "clock spring" (part of the air bag system), has failed twice in 46,000 miles. The vehicle has never been in any type of accident, or sustained any type of damage (ie, water related damage). The first failure was repaired under warranty, the second repair the dealer charged for. As this is a safety function, and the occupants are exposed to risk during failure, I believe two failures in 46,000 miles is unacceptable and is a design or manufacturing defect. I request that the NHTSA initiate an investigation, and if this defect is prevalent, issue a recall notice.

The air bag indicator is lit on my dash board. The passenger restraint system should be problem free for the life of the auto. The dealer says he is not sure of the failure with out dismantling the dash board at great costs. This is like a seat belt failing.

The air bag light came on first time in March 2003. The dealer repaired it. About a year later Feb 2004 the light came on again. The dealer said I need to pay for a diagnostic test and possibly pay for the part and repair service. He didn't think my extended warranty would cover it. I also emailed Chrysler and they talked to the dealer and told me I would have to pay to fix it. I don't have the money to repair it, nor do I think I am responssible for the repair. Manufacturer's defect! that's sort of like your seat belt not working. Saftey issues. Shouldn't wear out. Why hasn't Chrysler put out a service bullitin"?" I've read many complaints regarding the same problem.

Chrysler minivan clockspring defect airbag light stays on possibly loosing electrical connection. In fact, on 12/28/03 I was involved in a rear impact car accident and airbag did not deploy, despite the fact that my rear door and bumper had to be replaced at my local Chrysler dealership. I was informed that I was responsible to repair the clockspring. Thankfully, the impact was in the rear where no one was sitting. Had the impact been to the sides, where my grandchildren were sitting, or to the front, I shudder to think of the consequences.

I have had my airbag light come on for the second time now. After taking it to the dealer, it took them two times to figure out that there was a problem in the driver's seat belt buckle. This was only after I was told that it couldn't be looked at until the light was on. About six months later, the same thing was happening. I took it in to be looked at when I had the power steering cooling hoses replaced, and was told that the seat belt tensioner in the driver's seat belt needed to be replaced. Over a month has now passed, and I still have not been contacted to bring my van in to have my part replaced, since the dealer had to order it. I have had several quality issues as well ranging from interior components breaking or not being installed correctly, to the overall design of this van. Not to mention, the vehicle isn't even two years old, and it is not even worth half of the price I paid for it, according to the kelly blue book value. Once I get this vehicle sold or traded in, I'm never buying a Chrysler product again.
