Caravan SE 2.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 48,000 miles

Had car when new rustproofed, washed, and waxed regularly. Well kept, low mileage, never abused this vehicle. Should not be rusting away, design flaw. See everyone on the road has same problem, there should be a recall!

problem #1

Caravan SE 2.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 70,000 miles

I have to jump in on this one.....my 2006 Caravan (short wheel base) has actually been very reliable mechanically as I now (2015) have 135,000 miles without having to change wheel bearings or transmissions. BUT.......RUST......OMG! It was garaged for many years but even then the battle was on.....the rocker panels are mostly gone. Both sliding doors are rusted 6-8" up form the bottom, the leading edge of the hood is rusting despite my diligent effort to tough up stone chips, several welds, even on the back near the tail light, are rusting and there was no stone chip to start it.

I looked for replacement rocker panels but was not overly impressed. I started to overlay aluminum but that looked bad and had no good way to secure it. I tried the rust conversion sprays and rust-stop paints but there is no stopping it. It's like the original steel prep was bad and the rust is active from the inside. Finally I filled the rocker panel 'voids' with expanding foam, covered that with caulk (flexible but paintable) and than spray paint. I still can't stop the door or hood rust. Time to pass it on to one of the kids who needs to haul stuff and doesn't care about the looks.

BTW - my Civic is 2 years older, has 201,000 miles, was driven by the wife, 2 kids, and then me.......no body rust and almost no undercarriage rust! Take that Daimler-Chrysler!
