problem #2

Dakota 4-cyl

  • Manual transmission
  • 74,000 miles
My 1998 Dodge Dakota 4X2 pickup has 74000 miles on it. The truck recently developed a loud squeak in the area around the front driver's-side wheel. This squeak was traced to the sway bar and anti-sway rod. The bushings in this area of the truck are poorly designed and prone to failure. A check of a Dakota owners' forum (www.dodgedakotas.com) lists many Dakota owners having this same issue. What can happen with a sway bar that fails due to this type of bearing failure? the vehicle can become unstable during turns. This can lead to rollovers, injury and death. This is an unsafe and common failure on this vehicle.

Dakota 4WD 6-cyl

  • Automatic transmission

Front suspension, ball joints, & stabilizer bars were all replaced due to unusual wear & tear. The steering was popping and my front tires were loose. My vehicle was deemed unsafe by the dealer & needed immediate repair. According to the dealer this is a common problem with the Dakotas & durangos & daimler Chrysler is fully aware of this issue. I was told it would be in my benefit to bring my particular vehicles problem to NHTSA's attention as well as daimler Chrysler.
