Started by being slow to shift from 1st to 2nd gear. Now shifter will not go into park.

Frustrated that the vehicle will not go fully into park. Have to put the parking break on so the car does not roll when turned off. And, I have to push the shifter into the park position to turn off the car, but it won't stay in park. Have to start the car by shifting to neutral. Sucks.
