The 3.3 engine uses a quart of oil every 2 weeks but no leaks. The temperature gauge is OK and reads normal but the engine run hotter that normal. The only explanation than comes to my mind is that a hotter engine uses more oil. Its a Dodge and not a Toyota. If I could afford a Toyota I would buy one and not have the kind of problems that come with buying a Dodge or Chevy or Ford, but these mini vans are cheaper and come with their own set of usual problems that they have always had, it will never change. My neighbor has a 2004 Toyota mini van with 350000 thousand miles and the only cost out of pocket is tires, oil change and gas.

We bought our 2009 Grand Caravan in Oct. 2009, it had 30,000.k on it. we had the oil changed every 5k's. We took it to the dealer, they said burning a quart of oil was mormal. It is now june 2013 and needless to say we have bought alot of oil for the Caravan !! We were told by the dealer, we had to do a test that is required by Dodge.we had to put 1000 k'son, then take the van back to the dealers for them to check the oil, we had too do this five times. At the end of this test, the dealer said all was normal, that burning one Qt.of oil is normal ?? we argued the point of being normal. Thier are no leaks in the engin, so where is the oil going? To find that out they would have to pull the motor apart,(our waranty is still in effect) We were also told that to take the motor apart we are reliable for the bill? incase the insurance for whatever reason does not accept the claim!! It is now three months since the dealer told us that. We can not take that chance!! we now keep a close eye on the ( dip stick) That we can afford.

I bought the van used at the end of May, 2012. The dealer did the oil change. Dodge's owner manual states for oil changes 6 months or 6k miles. After 3 months and 4,500 miles the low oil pressure light came on. I checked the oil level right away on level ground and waiting for 5 minutes for the oil to level out. There was almost no oil on the dipstick. I bought 3 quarts of oil and ended up putting in all 3 bottles and the line still wasn't at full. I called the dealer and they confirmed the oil was changed. After that I wanted to keep a close eye on it, so I did the oil change at my friends shop with full synthetic oil (Valvoline). I bought the 5.28 quart jug and filled the oil to the full line on the dip stick. After 2500 miles I checked the oil and it was at the bottom of the safe line so I ended up putting in 2 quarts and the rest of the 5.28 jug and it filled it up to the top of the safe line. I called the dealer and they said when you were ready for an oil change we will inspect the car and do the consumption test, so I went to the dealer a few weeks ago and they did the oil change and checked for leaks which there was none and they marked the caps so no one could mess with it. After 930 miles I brought it back, I was told a thousand but I didn't have time later in the week, and they looked at it and the guy said it is normal consumption you are between full and add. I asked what the normal consumption is and he said "dodge states that 1 quart per thousand miles is normal for this vehicle" and my response as if I listened to that after 5k miles I would be out of oil, so much for the 6k mile oil change. After searching the internet I found there are a lot of complaints about the same thing. Personally I think this is dangerous as running out of oil and the engine seizing could cause an accident and you left with a useless vehicle.
