rust bubbles on hood rust bubbles on hood

I bought this van new and it's very well cared for. It's had several issues, this is one of them:

I first noticed small paint bubbles at front of hood, just above headlights. Within a couple (summer) months, they doubled in size and also appeared on side edges of hood. Took it to dealer where purchased (Falls Motor City), and was told it is not covered since warranty has expired. At that time van had just under 40k miles, warranty expired at 36k. Having read fine print of warranty, I explained vehicle rust/corrosion was warrantied for 5yrs/unlimited mileage. The girl at service desk told me I was mis-informed, it is not covered. They refused to physically inspect issue. Vehicle was literally parked ten feet away and they never even looked at it! "Sorry sir, we can't help you. We'd be happy to refer a local body shop." ...Unbelievable.

I sent a number of complaints directly to Dodge, (emails/calls/letter), and was contacted by a case adviser. I must say, this is where Dodge stepped up... Advisor took my statement and pics (email) and called to explain process. She would contact dealer and present my case to "the board". I guess there is a board which decides if complaint is valid. Within a week she called back. I have a valid complaint and should return to dealership for inspection. I told her I'm done with original dealer. They are 20 miles away and there is another one within 3 miles of home. Made arrangements to take it to other dealer. (Note: why did I purchase from farther dealer?...price.)

Arrived at new dealer (Fred Martin) and was greeted by a cheery gentleman who immediately inspected issue. He stated "Oh yes, that will definitely be covered, its one of the worst I've seen." He took pics and said he'd contact me. Next day he called to schedule a hood replacement. Within two weeks hood was replaced. No cost to me and loaner was provided. Issue has not returned. Dodge took care of me but I'll never deal with original dealership again... way to lose a customer and gain unlimited negative reviews!

Van is in the shop at the dealership and she just said paint isn't covered in bumper to bumper warranty. I suggested she make absolutely certain because of past issues so time will tell.

Grand Caravan SE 3.6L V6 Ffv

  • Automatic transmission
  • 23,000 miles

Bought vehicle in 2017 with 23k miles on it. Noticed a single bubble at that time but dealer convinced me that it was a blob of touch up paint. 1.5 years later and there are many big bubbles, some of which have cracked open exposing the bare metal underneath. This is unacceptable on a vehicle this new.

rust bubbles on hood rust bubbles on hood rust bubbles on hood

I see one other person reported this problem and I used the same drop down menu to report it (rust bubbles on hood) The hood on the 2016 Grand Caravan is actually aluminum so it is not really a "rust" issue but rather corrosion under the paint. The other person reporting was from a rust belt state which some might believe was part of the problem, my mini-van was purchased in Florida and has never been out of the state. The body shop told me they were afraid if they simply painted the hood to repair it the issue would happen again over time so they replaced the hood, I can only hope that is a long term solution because I often keep my vehicles a long time. My only expense was for a rental car and I hope in time my Mopar Protection Plan will reimburse me for that as well. The lame excuse for a dealer did not have rental vehicles at the body shop so I had to get Enterprise to pick me up.

Grand Caravan SXT 3.6L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 17,400 miles

We bought this 2016 BraunAbility Grand Caravan SXT new, didn't really drive it the first 2 winters, but the 3rd winter started using it 3 days a week to commute to work, this winter really took a toll on the body. During spring detailing (the van is never really that dirty) I noticed many rust blisters on the front hood edge between the grill and the headlights, no broken paint but clearly under the surface rust. Took the van into the dealer (Chrysler) after taking the van to a Braun dealer who was amazed the rust and said it was a Chrysler issue. Chrysler dealer stated they will replace the hood 1 time period, it will take 4 days and they will not cover a rental. Obviously they realize its an issue as I had no problems getting it looked at, there is however a wait for replacement as they have many other vans in need of the same fix. Not what one would expect from a van costing over 55,000 bought new and well cared for.
