I have a 2009 Dodge Journey with 133,000 miles on it but I have taken care of it. I have had this happen more than once and luckily it was just me and I didn't have my kids. While driving at a normal speed my car started to act like it wasn't getting enough gas to go, the rpms would go up and then crash down and car would die. I lost all power, no brakes and no power steering. I am lucky that I was able to get my car to start back up after a few minutes. I

ts not safe what so ever!! just the other day it did it again but no warning and I was turning off the highway to a ramp and it died, I had no power steering and was in the middle of turning and had to try and get it off the road before the car coming wouldn't hit me on the passenger side> I have seen that I am not the only one with this problem.

MY wife was driving the car down the road at about 55 MPH when the engine just stopped responding to throttle, she pulled over and cut it off , waited a few seconds and restarted it, It was the making a terrible clanking noise. , We had it towed to a Dodge dealership, where they said it took 2 1/2 Quarts of Oil to get it to show on the stick. The dealer said something about a spring caused it to suck the oil through the exhaust and that they would call Chrysler about the warranty (Lifetime Power-train) The dealer requested our service records from our local repair shop, ( my wife babies that car, so it gets oil changes as soon as the message comes up). It had just had it's 5 year inspection by Dodge a couple of months ago. New struts a few months ago and many, many brake jobs. We are, at this time, waiting for Chrysler to get back in touch with the dealer, (I will update this as things progress)

Update from Nov 22, 2013: Dealer has identified problem as thrown rod and is tearing it down to take pictures to send to Dodge (Why ,I don't know)

Update from Jan 19, 2014: Dealer has redefined problem as "Engine jumped time". This means that the Crankshaft and valve train got out of sync and the pistons and valves ran into each other.

They got Chrysler to cover the engine replacement under the Lifetime Power Train Warranty, They had to put a long block (Upper and lower engine parts) and even the Oil pump had to be replaced (lots of metal particles in oil) in it.

Car was at dealers for 1 1/2 months.

It took almost 2 years, 4 letters to the NYS Attorney General and 5 letters to Dodge to finally get some resolution to this dangerous problem. My 2009 Journey would die randomly while driving and/or would not start. The dealer I purchased it from was no help, I had to go to a Chrysler dealer to get any satisfaction. Was assigned a case manager who worked hand and hand with my Service Manager to finally stop the engine from dying. Now just had the car back in for the "No start" problem. They "think" they fixed the problem, something to do with the key fob. replaced it and reprogrammed my keys. Still having issues with the fob not locking and unlocking randomly, but so far (3 days later) the car is starting without a hitch. The dealer repaired the "dying" issue in November 2011, so far so good.... Knock on wood!!

I was driving- had been moving for less than a minute when the car just stopped going. the lights worked (interior/dome, odometer on the dash), but the windows wouldn't roll up, and (I think) the locks didn't work.

I managed to get it into park right away, but I couldn't take it out. The car wouldn't turn back on. It was stuck in park. The tow truck guy found a 'compartment' behind the gearshift and did something with a screwdriver to get the car to go into neutral.

The temp was 93 and my car had been parked for about 8 hours.

Previously, I have had an issue where the car wouldn't turn on the first time I tried. Sometimes, it would take 3 tries.

Also, I've had an issue where the dash lights turn off momentarily when the wipers are turned on or off.

After complaining many times to my Dodge service centre, I have given up asking if they can fix these many electrical / computer malfunctions.

The rear view camera turns off when you are reversing, the dashboard blanks out and the DVD player stops working. Each time I take it in, the service agents say that they "Can't find an issue with the computer or Electrics"

On this occasion - the car turned on, the electrics blacked out and one of the rear windows went down and would not go back up.

While driving to Orlando last Friday I was in stop and go 4 lane traffic. I was stopped with the car idling and traffic started to move but I wasn't moving when I pushed on the gas. I looked down and the engine light was on. Luckily I was in the next to the last lane and my car was rolling so I put on my flashers and I was able to pull onto the emergency lane. I turned the car off and sat there for a few minutes and tried to restart it. It restarted and I haven't had a problem since. This could have been a VERY bad situation as I was in bumper to bumper traffic and it could have caused an accident.

I decided that I would go see my mom for the weekend! Pull out of the driveway stop to put the car in drive..........It dies!! WTF, I thought maybe I did something wrong so I cut it back on and continue to drive down the street. Stop at the stop sign, the car dies again and the check engine light comes on!! Okay there is something definitely wrong. I turn the corner to to go back home, as I'm turning the corner the car dies again!!! What the heck is going on!!! I have only had this car for four months with only about 50, 000 miles on it!!! I take it to the dealer, they tell me it's a bad sensor so I have the sensor replaced!! 200 bucs later I pick up my car to find the check engine light still on and the car still dying when I drive it! The mechanic tells me it needs a new timing belt, he suggest that he tears the engine out to find the problem. Wait didn't you just say timing belt? Tear the engine apart??? The car has 50, 000 miles on it, why??? Then he say he really don't know what the problem is!!!! I'm irate at this point I paid 200 bucs to have my car handed back to me in the same way I gave it to them!!! So I took it back to them to have the problem looked into more, he tells me its a bad solenoid! After the first experience with them I wanted a second opinion the 2nd mechanic tells me I need a whole new computer put into it because it's not communicating with the solenoid. What do I do, I call dodge and explain the problem to them she said they call back!!! Heard from them they want to know what all have I had done to the the car!!! Does it really matter??? The car has 50,000 miles on it and it needs a whole new computer! There has got to definitely be something wrong with the way this car is built besides that how many other complaints have you got about this car dying while people are driving!!

What does it take, Dodge must want someone to die before they fix this problem on this car!! Word of advice don't ever ever ever buy a dodge, they suck!!!! Should have stuck with Chevy!

I have had my Dodge Journey for exactly a year. Within the last month, I have needed to have the rotors fixed. The car has also died on me while driving twice, not started by either manual ignition or remote started MULTIPLE times, had trouble with the exhaust rattling and "unidentifiable" trouble with the front right tire that squeals and creeks something terrible. Additionally last week my driver side door stopped working not allowing me to roll down the windows, change the power mirrors and lock or unlock the car. I am quit upset that I just put on 16,000 miles and the dealers (2) are having trouble figuring out how to fix it. This is my 4th trip to the dealer in the last month.

After taking delivery of my new Journey, within the first month, while driving down the road, the vehicle suddenly, without warning, throttled down and stopped dead in the road.

I had it towed to the dealer, who stated that the computer was showing error codes. The dealer re-set the computer and drove the car for 20 miles. They told us everything was ok....we picked up the vehicle, drove it 10 miles, and it stoppped dead in the road again!! (Apparently, the highly trained service techs did not know that you have to drive the car at least 30 miles to re-set the computer) Had the car towed again...to the dealer that I bought it from. That service manager found the computer defective and after three days had it replaced. The vehicle seemed to do ok after that....until after the 12,000 mile mark....then the brakes went (can you say computer again?)

Pretty pathetic; one week you are picking up your new car and the next it is in the shop 'cause it doesn't run. It went from 70 mph to 0 mph in 60 seconds....I barely had enough power to get it to the side of the road. I was lucky since I was driving in a rural area with little traffic but this could be deadly if it happened in a suburban area at top speeds.....

I bought this car on April 17, 2008. I've had the car two months, and now the dealer will have it for a month. That pisses me off!!! They gave me a replacement (a PT LOSER) I bought a 7 passenger and they give me a little 5 at best passenger. I'm waiting until the middle of July to get my damn car back.
