Ram 1500 SLT 4x4 5.9L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 100,000 miles

I reported my transmission problems earlier. Basically, the truck felt as though it would hit neutral or try to downshift when cruising at highway speed in overdrive. To test my theory I got into third gear and dumped the throttle. Instead of downshifting and taking off, if shifted into overdrive. That told me that the engine and tranny had no idea where my throttle was at. I got a new Throttle Position Sensor (located on driver's side of throttle body under air cleaner assembly) for $40 at Auto Zone and replaced it in about 10 minutes. No problems since.

Also, anyone worried about the life of their trans should consider a tuner. I just installed a Superchips Flashpaq and my trans shifts way smoother. Not to mention the extra power and mpg. Hope I helped.

Ram 1500 SLT 4x4 5.9L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 100,000 miles

I've been a Dodge enthusiast since my first car but I've read enough on this site to make me want to buy a Chevy. I bought this truck last month and spent $1,400 at my local mechanic (I'll never go to a stealership for repairs) replacing front suspension components, brakes, and getting a tune-up. But, of course, today my transmission started acting up. Basically, at highway speed (60-75mph) the trans would surge up and down roughly 200-400 rpm. It seemed like it was shifting into OD and right back out. This is strange since I was on a flat stretch of highway. Anyway, if it does it tomorrow, I'm going to replace the trans fluid and filter. I recommend that if anyone replaces their trans fluid that they be sure to use ATF+4 Type 9602 for Chrysler vehicles. Any other kind will kill your trans. If the fluid/ filter change fails I'll replace the Throttle Position Sensor. If this doesn't work I'll let you know and go from there.
