Ram 2500

  • 181,000 miles
This report is regarding the failure of a Goodyear Wrangler ats tire, load range D, size 305/70R16. For several months the vehicle has had a mild to moderate tire shake or in-balance. A Goodyear dealer re-balanced the tires, but there was no change in the shake. We returned the vehicle to the same dealer who then stated the tires were out of round and couldn't be balanced. They did not advise us to replace the tires or to stop using the vehicle. Two months later, after an hour at highway speed, the tire suddenly delaminated. The vehicle sustained over $3,000 in damage from the tire explosion. Control was not lost. Looking at the tire, it's very obvious this was the result of a manufacturing defect. Half of the steel belts are covered with a layer of bonded rubber. The other half of the belts are exposed. The separating line is right down the center of the tire. The small portion of tread that remains is separated from the belts, but is still bonded on the other side. It appears two strips of rubber were placed laterally on the face of the tire and one of them did not bond properly. I don't see any signs of patches. Although now rusted, the steel belts were bright when the tire first separated.

While inspecting the tires consumer noticed that they dry rotted and separated at the base where the tread was connected. Dealership inspected the tires, and acknowledged the failure. But did not provide the cause of the failure, instead offered consumer 50% off a new set of tires.

1/2 in from the rim the tire looks like sun rot as well as all the way around the sidewall, it is cracked and splitting aon the front and back tire, my mechanic said that this is very unsafe and if the tire gets hot the front and back will blow out, these tires only have 26000 miles on them, I haul a horse trail and a camper and am very concered about a blow out, while hauling a load. Both techs that looked at these tires said that the cracking and splitting is not right" can you give me advice to help ?"

Front right tire separated at 65mph almost causing a major accident and possible death. Dealer was notified at 2,410 mileage about front end vibration/shimmy. No cause found. Vibration in front end reported numerous times to dealer without problem being found since it continued. Was told "normal ride" for truck. Truck experienced numerous problems with front end suspension, rattles in dash from vibration, steering column excessive play etc, etc, etc. Remaining tires show signs of bluging and cracking. Tire was defective from begining in my opinion and put me at risk! dealer rebalanced/rotated tires many times and simply concluded the vibration/shimmy was normal for truck and stated I might have a better ride when loaded. Per news releases re pending investigation Goodyear load range E tires: My vehicle was delivered with Goodyear tires in question. Tires began immediate failure by scalloping leading edges of all tread blocks. Alignment, steering, balance all checked & w/in specs. At 3150 miles rotation made worse. At 3260 miles Dodge agreed to replace 4 tires w/ Michelin lts M&S; refused to change spare, same size. Tires finally received at 4477 miles. By then tread had scalloped off as much as 11/32". don't know if this is the pending investagation material, but I can document all with ro's & tire measurement data. Fyi: 5th (spare tire) sold as used at major loss and matching Michelin purchased out-of-pocket. Call for further information if required. (tiresize: 245/75R16E)( dot number: Tire size: 245/75R16E )

I carry a heavy camper, although in spec for the tires, about 25% of the time. Two tires failed by tread separation at about 13000 miles, no more than 5000 miles loaded. I paid for replacements. There was lots of tread left. Two more had failed by about 25000 miles, with about 5000 miles of loaded operation. These miles were at greatly reduced speed because of fear of failure. Again I replaced the tires, they were not given to me. Goodyear says the truck is at fault, Dodge says the tires are bad. No one laughed out loud. In all cases the tires had lots of tread left and the failure was delamination around the tread area. The tires did not lose air and therefore no accident vehicle damage resulted. I went thru the customer arbitration board at Dodge, claiming they selected inappropriate tires, to no avail. A concensus of tire people was that the engine had too much torque for the tires even though no overloaded. I became concerned that, since no assurances were given that the problem would not recur, the next failure might produce a accident. I threw away 4 virtually new tires and replaced them with cooper tires at my own expense. Good tire wear and no problems have been encountered with the cooper tires in almost 20000 miles. I would be happy to provide more information if requested. (tiresize: Lt24575R16)( dot number: Tire size: Lt24575R16 )

I was parked next to a curb in a lot at work care was behind me. Had to go over curb at 1-2mph heard bang tire blew out. Drove across street, pulled into lot, got out, gas tank dragging ground and sloshed gas all over road. Driveshaft had been turning against metal plate on side of tank-straps broke-had no warning of anything wrong-had to have truck towed-sloshed gas all over trailer-drivers' parting words "pray for me". I called Dodge told them I wasn't paying for a safety defect, and that I wasn't happy. They called dealer dealer took care of it no charge. Very upsetting having gas tank fall off of what is supposed to be a heavy duty truck. Appears only one strap holding tank up -no secondary supports. Anybody else have this type of thing happened to them? I can't imagine being in a wreck if it is that fragile.
