Ram 2500 SLT 6.7L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 120,000 miles

Traveling I-390 south bound around 65 - 67 mph felt slight vibration in steering and front end. Heard loud whistle and hum and thought maybe for a split second I tossed a wheel weight. Only to hear a loud explosion and watching a shower of parts in my rear view mirror. Managed to get the vehicle to the side of the road and stepped out to find the transfer case lying behind the vehicle and the drive shaft had destroyed every wire and brake line under the truck.

It doesn't end there... a vehicle pulled up behind me eventually to "see" if I was alright but really was only there because pieces of huge metal most likely u-joints and bearings and gears had smashed the front of their vehicle. This had happened with zero symptoms until 1 or 2 minutes before total t case failure. I am just thankful that someone didn't get seriously hurt or worse.

Now some people might be skeptical which is fine and dandy but I am a mechanic by trade and service my vehicle and take good care for it. if it needs work I repair it. This could have been a deadly incident by all measures and happened without any warning on a dry sunny day in 2 wheel drive. BY the way the t-case had plenty of fluid and the carbon yoke was tight with zero issues. Parts shopping fix is around 5k
