The EGR heat exchanger cover is an important part of the water coolant system/circuit - FIAT are aware of the fault with the injection molding of their EGR heat exchanger cover, because they have had the component redesigned/updated to remedy the problem, BUT they have not conducted a manufacturer recall they just wait for the component to break and for their customers to sit at the roadside and pick-up the cost, which can be very considerable.

The component can break in as little as 28,090 miles after very careful driving and 6 services! If the driver doesn't notice the temperature gauge increase to hot and then drop back to cold, the lack of coolant will damage/break the turbo / head gasket and then maybe a new engine would be required, but that's OK because the customer is paying if it fails outside of the warranty.

Thanks FIAT! Fiat representatives have told us they have replaced quite a few broken EGR heat exchanger covers, again Thanks FIAT! My mother would have been left at the roadside with my disabled stepfather for hours waiting for auto recovery if I hadn't rescued them using the VW allowing them to drive on and for me to wait for recovery.
