POWER STEERING GOES OUT WITHOUT WARNING WHILE DRIVING IN THE MOUNTAINS. AND IF MY DAUGHTER WITH HER NEW LICENSE HAD BEEN DRIVING, SHE WOULD PROBABLY BE DEAD.

My power steering went out on my 2009 Ford Escape Hybrid. I was driving lower speeds to make a near 90 degree turn and then the wheel was very hard to move. I had a low speed crash with my front end. Car still runs but lots of damage that I can't afford to repair. Apparently Ford recalled the steering column for regular Escapes but not the hybrids despite the same faulty design. Dealer quoted me $1200 to replace the entire steering column. Now I have a car that runs but I can't drive. I'll be biking until Ford recalls the Hybrid steering columns I guess. There's no aftermarket steering column so it's all thru Ford at $550 a pop. There might be an aftermarket torque sensor that I'll look into and maybe that may fix the problem.

I see that Ford has recalled 2008 thru 2012 Escapes for this problem. When I talked to the local dealer he told me my call was not part of the recall.

Any suggestions how I should proceed?
