Expedition Eddie Bauer 5.4L V8

  • Automatic transmission
  • 94,000 miles

Check Engine light came on while on the highway. My mechanic, a guy I trust, said the computer reported a misfire on #1 cylinder. He pulled the plug, found no problem, put it back, and engine ran OK. However, light came back on almost immediately after I left. He's going to take another shot at it after researching it online. He's baffled.

This was the second coil to fail. This time it was very difficult to diagnose and took several trips to the shop to get it solved. Much more of a inconvenience.

Expedition XLT 3.2L V8

  • Automatic transmission
  • 76,825 miles

I am continuing to have this problem (along with hundreds of other problems with this vehicle)... I have had all new coil packs, new boots for coil paks, and new plugs put onto the vehicle. Nothing seems to fix this problem for more than a week. I am so sorry I ever bought this SUV and can promise it is my last Ford. My daughter and her husband recently bought a new car. She was looking at the Ford Explorers, but thank god she does listen to me, and opted for a Chevy Trailblazer. Hope she has better luck than I.

Expedition XLT 4.6L V8

  • Automatic transmission
  • 50,000 miles

Driving around Amish Country in ohio, and the engine starts to sputter and vibrate, especially around 1500 RPM. There is a significant lack of power, and the Check Engine light is flashing, indicating misfire. Took it to autozone, hooked it up to the reader, and got a Cylinder 7 Misfire. Checked the spark plug and ignition coil, the coil-over-plug coil pack was faulty, replaced it ($50 for the part) myself, (easy fix) and voila, good as new.

Expedition XLT FX4 5.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 41,008 miles

IDK about ford anymore!!! This is my 2nd American vehicle and this vehicle has put me through too many problems. I have multiple issues with this Expedition since I purchased in 2003....Currently it sputters and jerks at cruising between 50-60MPH. Today It started to misfire when taking off from a red light, I was so lucky I was a half mile away from home. I was able to drive 15MPH to home with severe misfiring. I shut it off and then started the engine and it was normal....weird!!!

Any solutions??.....This vehicle has 41,008 miles and is out of the manufactures basic 3yr warranty!!!!

Update from Jun 23, 2009: I performed a full COP/Coil on plugs and sparkplug replacement. Very time consuming and very expensive. The design on this motor is outdated and poorly engineered!! Be very carefull as these years from 97-04 are known for blowing the sparkplug out of the motor. Work on the motor when it's cold/cool not HOT!! Be very careful removing and installing the sparkplugs,
