Expedition Limited

  • 68,000 miles

Driving home from work yesterday, going 45mph on a 2 lane hwy in a sleet storm in the midwest & my truck seemed to lose power. Tried to give it gas, but nothing happened, also tried to brake & realized my brakes weren't working. Everything had gone out. I was lucky that oncoming traffic was far enough off and I was close enough to a side street that I coasted it (steering w/ manual steering only) into a turn until it stopped. Again I was lucky I had enough power left to make that turn and not get stuck in the middle of it.

My cell phone was almost dead because my office had been without power all day at work & I hadn't been able to charge it. It took several attempts to get a call to my husband who had chosen not to drive his semi in the storm that day (thank God!). He drove over in his old little car to take a look. He went & bought a battery, but we both knew that wasn't going to do it.

At 68,000 miles, it was time for a new one anyway. But, the truck was still a sitting duck as it was just off a main highway where a lot of traffic turns. He ended up having to get his semi tractor & pull my truck home. Then together (me getting over bronchitis & him w/ a lingering cough from the flu), in the sleet, snow & mud, we pushed the Expedition into my driveway (we live in the country). He said he didn't think it was the fuel pump but after some research believes it may be a part leading to the fuel pump that he says is apparently a "known issue". He's going to buy that part after delivering a load today. We'll see.

I never had a problem before. To totally lose power suddenly while driving down a busy two lane highway in a storm was really scary. This could have caused a major accident. I'm still thankful my truck didn't get hit after I was able to get it to the side road because we don't have "shoulders" on side roads in the country :-(

This is the third time my truck has just died while I'm driving. THANKFULLY nobody has been injured!!!

First occurrence: Truck died while driving 45mph (thankfully nobody was behind me), I turned the key off then back on & it restarted. After about 20 minutes of driving the engine light came on. 2 codes regarding the throttle were found. Second occurrence: Was turning on a road & truck died. Again after about 10-15 minutes engine light came on (same codes). Third occurrence: Driving 60mph & truck died (there were cars behind me but thankfully I was in outer lane & was able to coast on side of road ~although steering wheel was VERY hard to turn).

I Googled this problem & found over 70 complaints just like mine... Very curious if anybody knows a fix or some suggestions??? Seen on one complaint to call Ford & NHTSA.. Any other help is very appreciated!!!!!

Seems like I'm joining the party!!!!! My 2006 Ford Expedition is stalling and killed on my wife while driving. This is not the first time it stalled, but it is the first time it killed!!! Two weeks after purchase we took the vehicle on I-10 (only about 54 miles from home) and on the way back the truck started to stall and shake really bad. We took the truck to the dealership where a diagnostics found that the problem was the spark plugs and coils. This problem was corrected.

A few weeks later the current situation happens. (kills on my wife) We took it to a different location to run diagnostics (Ford dealership said they couldn't take it til next week) to find that the issue is the throttle body!!! So needless to say as I type my vehicle is in the shop for repair. Hopefully this fixes the problem but Ford needs to get a handle on this and have a recall before it's eternally too late! Wish I had ran across this site before purchasing the vehicle!!! I did e-mail Ford's corporate office, but not sure that will make a difference!

Expedition Eddie Bauer 5.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 135,000 miles

It has lost power several times before and we have have the Coil on Plugs changed, a new throttle body installed, and plugs changed. (The plug change was the worst plug change I have ever encountered, that alone was over $600 due to the fact several plugs broke off in the engine. We had to take it to a local shop because the dealer said he would not cover it WHEN they broke off so i went to a local shop that stated he had the best toll to get the plugs out when the broke and that he does several of these a month). I do all the recommended maintenance.

But back to today....

My wife and kids drop me off at the airport for my return trip to Afghanistan and they were going to go to Arkansas to spent some time with the family, that makes it easier for my wife and kids to transition back to deployed life a little at a time.

So I get to Atlanta and call my wife to find out that they are at the Ford dealer after a two hour wait for a tow truck and hour ride to the dealer. After 4 hours at the dealer my wife got the news, the fuel pump or injector stayed open in the #1 cylinder an the cylinder filled with fuel that would not compress and bent the rod and caused other internal damage. All that is only $7,500

Expedition XLE 5.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 42,560 miles

I bought my 2006 Ford Expedition back in March 2008 with about 42000 miles on it. First it was fine, until 6 months later the car shut off every now and then, especially at stop lights. So I have my mechanic look at it and he told me the electrical throttle control was the problem. So I have that replaced and it cost 400 hundred dollars, but since then the car works just fine.
