F-150 XL 4.6L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 84,000 miles

One day I noticed my wipers would turn on and off for no reason. This was followed by noticing that some times my blinker would freak out for no reason, too. That's when the oil pressure gauge started to bounce for no reason. All these weird electrical issues coincided with each other about the same time. At first it was just once in a while. Then it was only after the truck warmed up in drive. Then it was drive and reverse. I'd shift it to park or neutral and it would vanish. Now, once it warms up, the gauge bounces in everything. I've brought it to 3 different mechanics who say the engine's oil pressure is holding fine even though the gauge says otherwise. One theorized that it had to do something with the heat of the motor and the tilt when it was in drive grounding out the gauge so it couldn't read properly. They all say it's something electrical and not worth the labor costs to hunt down. Though, one odd note, after an oil change by a new mechanic in Ohio (I live in northern Minnesota) the gauge stopped bouncing completely. Next oil change and it returned.

As heat makes the oil gauges bounces, the cold tends to freak out my blinkers. The colder it gets, the more they refuse to turn on when I take a left turn. I often have to manually flash the blinker because it just doesn't want to turn on. It's like the handle for the blinker on my steering column doesn't want to align when it's cold resulting it in being just a hair off and not connecting the electrical signals to tell the blinker to blink.

F-150 XLT 4.5L V8

  • Automatic transmission
  • 160,000 miles

All gauges(oil, temp, charge, fuel, speedometer, trip and tach quit working intermittently, the dash lights are not affected. In the beginning the fuel guage would work intermittently and also not read correctly, the faster you drove the more fuel it showed. Changed the fuel send/pump, changed PCM, changed GEM. This last time the gauges quit working for a week. Fuel gauge still does not read accurately.

You can hear a click if the gauges start working while driving. I have the Ford Manuals and can not find any mention of a relay or switch. The Ford dealer has no clue either. I was told that this was a common problem on the Crown Victoria Police cars at and around my year vehicle and that it was a bad relay (which I can not locate).
