Vehicle had grinding noise at low speed/during right hand turns in 2WD. Ford dealer previously replaced the wheel bearings 2 times.

This time they found that the IWE check valves were bad (part of the 4WD Auto system) which would cause rotation speed difference between the hub/axle and eventually degrade the bearings.

I would not recommend using 4-Auto.

Ford dealer replaced both IWE check valves and bearings in the front hubs.

Intermittent, metal scraping noise, under moderate acceleration. It sounded like the 4wd was trying to engage. I looked into it and there is a service bulletin 18-2273 that explains exactly how to fix this issue. So I took it to the dealer and after several days in their care, they couldn't reproduce the noise, so they wouldn't do any work on it. The problem has reoccurred, but it's sporadic, so by the time I take it to the dealer, it's not doing it anymore.

One of the very first steps to remedy this issue (via the bulletin) is to replace a $10 vacuum check valve (part YG360 I believe) for the IWE's. It takes less than a minute to change, and it seems to work for most people. You could also replace the whole tube assembly if your vacuum lines are aging (part FL3Z-3A788-B). Hopefully this post will help someone, because I know some people have went years with this issue, and got no help from the dealerships.

In 2wd, at slow speed there is a grinding noise on passenger side. I have taken it to the dealer and they claim the diagnostics don't show anything and they can't replicate the issue. When pulling out of the dealer it makes the noise for me, and is becoming more common. To me, it seems like the front hubs are trying to engage due to a vacuum leak for the 4wd system. only occurs at low speed and doesn't occur when AWD or 4wd is engaged.
