Axle bolt connecting the rear passenger side wheel to the axle completely sheared off. Wheel starting making a terrible sound while driving and upon inspection found the sheared axle bolt.
- Buckley, WA, USA
The axle bolt has broken twice. The first time I was advised the factory torqued it too tight. The entire axle was replaced. The second time both hub assemblies were replaced. I was told there was a recall but no one could advise me why it was happening or any specifics on the recall. Both time the bolt was found to be broken when I had the tires rotated, there was no odd sounds or odd driving movement to indicate something was wrong. I took the truck into have the bolt inspected after about 1,000 miles to make certain it was ok. The bolt was intact but I was told that the Ford had issued a recall for trucks from a made at a certain factory for using "bad bolts." No one could tell me which factory, if my truck was from that factory and how bad bolts were used for a second time after it was fixed initially. I have not received a recall notice from Ford reference bad bolts or axle issues.

I removed my wheels for standard rotation. When I removed the wheel from the passenger side rear, I found the rear axle bolt was fractured. The portion of the bolt and washer were inside the wheel. This appeared to have been chronic. Pictures available. I did not attempt to remove this bolt. This spontaneously sheared off. It was literally sitting inside the wheel hub.
