My 2007 Ford Focus started ticking with 60,000 miles on the motor. This is a common thing with this cheap car that was made in Mexico. Replacing ticking lifters in the 2.0 Duratech motor is an extremely complex operation and was past my skill level of being a mechanic. I've seen cars with 150,000 to 250,000 start a lifter tick but not 60,000 miles! I went to 2 different Ford dealerships because I was curious on how much the quote would be. They were dumb founded that on my request because their labor book did a repair qoute of $1600 for a timing chain replacement only. Their labor book didn't include a qoute for replacing a ticking lifter at all! The job requires a complete timing chain removal and removal of the intake and exhaust camshafts to get to the lifter tappets.
So I talked to a mentor of mine and he agreed to do the job. I agreed to pay him $50 an hour plus parts, he could give not give me a total repair price. It tool all 33 years of his exprience to replace not 1 but 4 bad ticking lifter tappets on the exhaust camshaft. I had driven the car for 20,000 miles while it was ticking because I could not find anyone willing to do the job. So I was worried that I would have a bad camshaft or both camshafts would be chewed up because of the bad lifters. Luckly, the camshafts were fine and lifters cost $32.00 for four of them. He said this job is a real PITA and compare it to working on a European cars. I was happy about getting a heck of a deal with the repair. In my experience this job at the dealership would have cost well over $2000! but here's the real kicker of the story 16,000 miles later the engine started having a lifter tick again, WHAT A POS!!! At 112,000 miles later I haven't wanted to put any more money into this rolling meltdown so its still ticking. Really can't afford another car right now so I'll just deal with it until Im forced to do so. I will never buy another Ford because they are cheap pieces of crap! Stay away from all Ford products unless you want to dump tons of dough into them! When I can buy another car I'm seriously thinking about using this car for target practice at a friends gun range. And I would send a picture directly to Ford Motor Company with a letter stating that this is the only use for ANY of their products!
