1/2 inch hole at the rear of the van 1/2 inch hole at the rear of the van

We've been slowly adding parts and accessories to the van. This time around, we removed the passenger side rear molded panel in an attempt to take measurements for an interior spare tire mount. But we ended up making a disturbing discovery. There's a 1 1/2 hole at the rear of the floor of the van which allows fumes to enter into the cabin. We thought nothing of it because we just had an oil change. But the issue was growing in severity as the smell was increasing.

Because the tail pipe does not extend out beyond the rear bumper, the exhaust fumes lingers under the van then enter through this hole at the rear of the cargo area. We've temp fixed this with a shop rag shoved into the hole but have a plastic/rubber grommet on order that will fit the hole. One can access this are by removing the slotted rear access panel from that area of the van. Check to see if there's a hole and if so you'll need to locate the grommet to plug this hole. WARNING: if left untreated, this can cause serious injuries or even death, because the exhaust fumes can enter into your vehicle. Two cures to this are: plug this hole and have the muffle shop extend the tail piper spout beyond the rear bumper.
