Vehicle was backed into a concrete porch in the driveway at a low speed. Side airbags near the front seats partially deployed, separating the plastic and releasing smoke/powder into vehicle without deploying the airbag and locked the seat belts so tightly it broke the plastic base of the seat belts.

When starting the vehicle I get a "service airbags" warning. I push the dash button that clears the display and it does not come back on. Only when I am stationary and have just started the engine. I mentioned it to my dealership and they said, "oh, that could be expensive." I have yet to get it serviced because others have stated the problem and spent lots of money to no avail. I am concerned that this is a factory defect and could be life threatening if ever involved in an accident. I have 159,000 miles on my vehicle and the warning began in the last 18 months.

The passenger seat seatbelt and airbag lights come on when no one is in the seat, or when something very light, such as a coke can is in the seat. This can happen at any point during a trip, and I have to buckle the seatbelt to stop the warning bell. It makes me nervous that the seat is so sensitive, and I fear the airbag may be sensitive as well. I make my daughter sit in the back, because I'm concerned for her safety. The vehicle can be stationary or in motion when this happens. It used to happen randomly, but it's been happening even if nothing is in the seat the last four days. There has been no recall on my vehicle.

The contact owns a 2010 GMC Acadia. The contact stated that the air bag warning indicator illuminated, which was a safety concern. The vehicle was taken to bentley Chevrolet (1950 florence blvd, florence, al) where it was diagnosed that the air bag control module needed replacement. The vehicle was repaired, but the indicator illuminated again. The vehicle was taken back to the same dealer where it was diagnosed that it needed a new battery and wiring. The vehicle was repaired again, but the failure still recurred. The manufacturer was notified of the failures and they were notified by the dealer that the failures could not be duplicated. The failure mileage was approximately 130,000.

I have had 3 recalls on my 4 year old Acadia in the last several months and also had to replace my power steering at less than 65,000 miles. My car is back at the dealer for the third time in less than 10 days for the service air bag light after they have attempted to fix the recall. Although no specific safety incident, my concerns with the ability of the dealer/automaker to provide a safe vehicle and well as the overall lack of reliability of the car in less than 4 years is both disappointing and concerning. I am currently in touch with GMC about my options.

Acadia

  • 85,000 miles
The GMC Acadia has recently had a recall for a piece within the seat for air bags. However there is another piece called the passenger presence module (part #20933923) within the same seat that is also defective but not covered in the recall. This piece basically determines if someone is sitting in the seat and if the airbags need to be deployed if in an accident. If this piece is not working properly the person sitting in the passenger seat may be at risk. This car has never been in an accident nor have the airbags ever been deployed.

Starting in July 2013, after driving my 2010 Acadia for over 90 miles and stopping it for an hour or so I restarted the Acadia and the air bag service light appeared and stayed on. I stopped for gas after 60 miles and when I restarted the car the light did not come on. I stopped again after 25 miles and when I restarted the car the light came on. I restarted the Acadia the next day and no air bag service light. This again occurred numerous times after a 1 hour drive or longer. Recently, October/November 2013 the air bag service light appears after much shorter trips (less than 10 miles). Up to now, when I first start up the car in the morning, the air bag service light does not come on. But now it comes on after more frequent stops and restarts. Current mileages 33,143. 3 year warranty period expired 5/2013 however, I have not reached the mileage warrant period.

The contact owns a 2008 GMC Acadia. The contact stated that on an intermittent basis the air bag light would illuminate on the instrumentl panel. The vehicle was inspected by a dealer, where they were unable to diagnose the failure. In addition, the contact stated that while pulling out of her driveway at a low speed the vehicle suddenly stalled. She was unable to restart the vehicle and had to push it to the side of the road. The vehicle was then towed to a dealer, where they were unable to diagnose the failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, but offered no assistance. The failure and current mileages were approximately 43,000.

Acadia

  • 6,900 miles
The battery on my GMC Acadia died on the 15th February and the dealer could not identify anything wrong with the vehicle. The following Monday the service air bag light came on and I was told the sensor was not working right and the parts were ordered. The Friday of 2/26 the check engine light was on and the vehicle would not accelerate above 50mph and half the gas tank was emptied in 25 miles. During that Friday the engine was still running even after I pulled the key out of the ignition. That same night the battery died and could not be jump started. The vehicle was inspected on 3/1 and the air bag sensors along with fuse box was replaced as water was leaking into the fuse box. All of this happened in the mileage range of 6800 to 7100 approximately. The dealer has replaced the fuse box and the vehicle is running fine so far.
