Sierra 1500 Denali 6.2L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 38,000 miles

Transmission issues with this truck since day 1, took to various dealers and many could not duplicate..

Then one visit for vehicle inspection, I mentioned this transmission has not gotten any better. They said GM issued some bulletin to replace with different fluid, increased viscosity. however, this was not a recall and expected to fix the shutters, jerks, or plain sloppiness of this transmission. Of course, things are not better... Shutters subsided but transmission still jerks and "head bangs" you in downshifts or randomly in early acceleration.

Sierra 1500 SLT 6.2L V8

  • Automatic transmission
  • 250 miles

Started with hard upshifting and downshifting. Clunking noise when changing into and out of lower gears. Took truck to get fixed numerous times and they always said nothing wrong or normal for this transmission. Once they found dirty fluid and changed it, no help. Another time there was a notice to change the fluid. They told me this would fix the problem, but made it worse. One service rep told me I had a quirky transmission. I told him I didn't pay 50,000 for a truck with a quirky transmission. Still having a problem but don't know what else to do.

The transmission knocks randomly on any gear. When I accelerate, decelerate (without foot on pedal), passing a car. Dealer said it's normal and there are no solution. Seriously.... first GM experience and certainly the last time.

Test drove a '17 GMC Sierra XLT w/6.2L. Beautiful and powerful truck. Did a quick 3-point turn-around to go back to dealership and it jerked when rolling forward in 1st. It was significant enough to ask my wife if she felt that, which she did. I told the salesman riding in the backseat that that should not happen and was not normal. His reply was "it's still learning how you drive and adjusting". Mmkay. After driving it, I logged on to carcomplaints to see if a similar issue was noted.... Well, here I am. Thanks for helping me avoid a $40k mistake!

Sierra 1500 V8

  • Automatic transmission
  • 22,000 miles

Second time I had in to the dealer for the hard shift out of first gear. Biggest annoyance is when the you are at a slow roll and hit the gas. Transmission slams the entire truck. Dealer told me the problem is the transmission does not work well with the electric assist motor. Said to expect computer updates every 6 months. Just had it rest again today and marginally better. Will be bringing it back every couple months and get this qualified under the lemon law.

P.S. GMC eliminated the electric assist in the 2019 models due to this problem.

Sierra 1500 SLT1 6.2L

  • Automatic transmission

I dropped my truck off at the dealership service department and informed the sales staff that I was having a significant engine/transmission related problem that I did not feel comfortable driving the vehicle. I made an appointment and left the vehicle. It is current being troubleshot; the mechanic informed me that an ejector must be replaced and the transmission must be further analyzed to determine what is going on with the vehicle. I was informed that a loaner vehicle may be provided if they can not repair my truck in the near term. I am currently renting a car for getting to/from work. This problem was noticed on the first day of purchase but I was informed that it was normal, but the problem has gotten worse and more intense.

Update from Jan 9, 2019: I purchased the 2017 GMC Sierra, Crew Cab, SLT 1, truck from Sam Taylor Buick/GMC/Cadillac in Fort Walton Beach FL. I noticed a faint shifting problem immediately, but was told it was normal and it would go away eventually. The problem has become extremely noticeable and severe at times. I do not feel that the vehicle is reliable to drive outside my immediate commuting area until it is repaired by certified GMC mechanics. Sam Taylor Buick, GMC, Cadillac is now under new ownership and they are trying to resolve the mechanical issues with my vehicle. I will give the a fair opportunity to do right by their GM product. I will update this post as more information comes to light.

Update from Jan 14, 2019: Step One Buick GMC of Fort Walton Beach, FL has been working on my 2017 GMC Sierra 1500, 6.2 L truck for almost 1 week now. I rented a car during the first week and now waiting to get a loaner. The Service Department says its put back together but requires a road test; its now1:52 pm --apparently the road test must be a length process. No calls yet. Why hasn't the State of Florida, Texas, and other Consumer Affairs agencies gotten involved with this GMC Sierra vehicle issue? (Rhetorical) The public always get lip service and NO ACTION but when it comes to enforcing product standards and laws to protect the public. These vehicles should be classified as lemons after Big GMC fails to correct the defects!

Update from Jan 15, 2019: Step One Automotive Group, aka Sam Taylor Buick Cadillac, returned my 2017 Sierra after 1 week of troubleshooting the check engine light, vibrating steering column, as well as the shuddering and knocking in low gears. The remedy was to replace an ejector, clean the trans pan, and replace the transmission fluid. I still feel the shifts during the transition through the lower gears, but its a bit smoother....no banging from the rear differential. The Service staff could have followed through with providing the loaner vehicle once I returned my rental car. The good part is that I was not charged for the repairs. The Service Department staff was on point and the mechanic work acceptable, however, I do not believe the issues have been permanently resolved. Time will tell. If there is a recurrence of the same issues, I will likely trade the GMC Sierra for another brand that is more reliable.

THIS PROBLEM STARTED ABOUT DAY ONE AND THE DEALER SAID IT IS NORMAL. THE OWNER OF THE DEALERSHIP ( DANNY-LEN MOUNT DORA, FL. ) HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH HIS (THE SAME VEHICLE) AND THE DEALERSHIP TRIED TO FIX IT BUT I HEARD THEY COULD NOT. THEY SAID IF THE FIX ON HIS WORKS, THEN THEY WILL TAKE CARE OF MY TRUCK.

NOW MY TRUCK HAS 9900 MILES ON IT AND THEY CONTINUE TO SAY GMC SAYS THEY CAN NOT FIX WHAT GMC SAYS IS NORMAL.THEIR MECHANIC SAYS THERE IS A PROBLEM AND A HIGH RANKING DEALERSHIP PERSON LEFT A MESSAGE ON MY CELL TELLING ME IT WILL BE ADDRESSED WHEN THEY FIX THE OWNERS.

PLEASE HELP GMC HAS SAID THEY WILL ADDRESS THE PROBLEM BUT THE HAVE CONTACTED ME JUST A FEW TIMES OVER THE YEAR WITH NO HELP IN SIGHT. CAN YOU HELP? THE TRANSMISSION BANGS INTO GEAR JUST ROLLING SLOW OUT MY DRIVEWAY GOING DOWN THE STREET OR IN PARKING LOTS. IT SOUNDS LIKE MY TRANSMISSION WILL BREAK APART MOST OF THE TIME.

Update from Nov 26, 2018: THE DEALER RECENTLY DID THE SECOND OIL CHANGE AND I WANT TO TAKE A LONG RIDE OUT OF STATE, BUT WE ARE VERY WORRIED.

Sierra 1500 SLT 5.3L V8

  • Automatic transmission
  • 1,000 miles

A similar long-standing problem as others, extremely hard shift from 1st to 2nd right around 6 mph. Always happens with a slow start, every morning, guaranteed. Also happens in parking lots and stop and go traffic. Dealer refuses to do anything to correct or doesn't have the know how. Honestly, a reprogram is not going to fix a mechanical problem. Also started noticing hard downshift with quick deceleration. This was a lot of money to spend on something that does not operate correctly. This is my first and last GM product.

Wish I had found this site before my purchase.

Sierra 1500

  • Automatic transmission
  • 800 miles

I purchased a new 2017 GMC Sierra 1500 from Vann York Motors in High Point, NC. After just a few weeks, the issue began with the transmission slipping/changed hard between 1 and 2 gears. Have now had it back at York 4X and at the local dealer in Burlington once as I am tired of dealing with Vann York. They all have tried multiple "fixes" but nothing seems to correct the issue.

I stopped by the local dealer today for another service and mentioned the transmission issue. I was told that GM is fully aware of the problem and corrected with 2018 models by going to a 10 speed transmission. So we are stuck with 2017 trucks with issues that GMC is apparently denying or hoping we will just get tired of complaining about and "go away".

I am now pursuing the Lemon Law since I have records of multiple attempts to repair and still no success.

Sierra 1500 I 5.3L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 0 miles

Both transmission and rear axle clunk then truck lunges forward when going from first to second gear. We have taken GMC truck three times to two dealers. They update software. The dealers have not solved. Problem takes place between first and second gear. Usually in these situations; when you have to be light on the pedal, Parking garages, Parking lots and Stop and go traffic. It may be a steering problem, if not the transmission.

Before this General Motors purchase, I had not bought an American car since my 1976 Oldsmobile. How soon we forget

Sierra 1500 Denali 6.2L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 190 miles

I purchased a 2017 GMC Sierra Denali from George Carr Buick Cadillac GMC, Inc. located in Vicksburg Mississippi on December 29th 2017.

When I test drove the truck I instantly noticed a vibration on the freeway. The salesman assured me that it was just a simple flat spot in the tires from sitting in the lot. Sounded reasonable to me. He said, "Don't worry. It would be 100% fixed!" The tires were replaced and this has yet to correct the problem, during the last visit I was told it was the transmission and my vehicle was at the dealership another 5 days and once I picked the vehicle up I was informed that the tires were out of balance, shortly after leaving the service department I call back and spoke with the service manager and informed him that this vibration was not only back but now the transmission and or rear differential are making a loud clucking sound, this occurs while driving at low speeds and when coming to stops, example while pulling away from stop sign loud clunk and the vehicle surges forward.

1. Repair vehicle vibration at below and above 40 miles per hour 2. Fix vehicle vibration at idle 3. Resolve the engine bucks and missing issue 4. Resolve the jerking and surging motion of the vehicle 5. Replace Tire with factory rand tires and not no names as previously done 6. Repair the loud clucking transmission banging and slamming noises heard in the transmission and rear differential

Sierra 1500 Denali 5.3L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 500 miles

When going slow it will shift hard and clunks sometime worse then others when shifting from 1st to 2nd and other times it works right. I have had it to the dealer at least 3 times. 1st time they said it was too new and had to learn my driving habits. At about 3500 miles they did a adaptive relearn. The third time they found an update and did a relearn, no change. Now there is around 7500 miles on it and I was told there is nothing else they can do and this normal for this 8 speed transmission. At 58000 dollars it is ridiculous to think this is OK. They need to come up with a fix for this. I'm not the only one with this problem go on GMC trucks.com. There are 9 pages of complaints for this problem. I would be afraid to buy the new 2019 truck coming out, as they can't even get the current model right.

Sierra 1500 Plus Package V8

I purchased this 2017 GMC Sierra new in July of 2017 from Vince Whibbs in Pensacola , Florida . Not long after that when the truck was cold and I put it into reverse or drive it created a really hard shift. Also at low consistent speeds it would create the same shift although not as hard. My first of five trips to the Vince Whibbs GMC service center They said that the gears had to be reprogrammed . It did not work. The second and third time after about a week of keeping my truck they said that they could not diagnosis the problem. The fourth trip they worked of something and now it has a new problem and the original problem is still there. We are now schedule for a fifth trip to Vince Whibbs GMC automotive " repair "shop. GMC will no longer communicate with me. Vince Whibbs so far has put me on ignore . What good is a warranty if you can't fix it? Hey Vince Whibbs, what happened to we will take care of you after the sell? Vince Whibbs GMC in Pensacola , Florida is doing nothing to help rectify the issue of the lemon that they sold me. Hey GMC stand behind your product. Right this wrong.

Update from Feb 8, 2018: After my fifth time to Vince Whibb's GMC my new 2017 GMC Sierra is still having the same issues.
