The car slams on the brakes when you tap on them LIGHTLY but QUICKLY. The issue is that if you are not expecting the car to slam on the brakes, you can get in a rear-end collision.
The car did not do this when the car was new.
I think a RECALL is necessary as another vehicle at the dealer presented the same symptoms, and it was of similar age.
The first time it happened, I was driving on the highway, someone was going slowly in front of me, so I tapped the brake quickly so slow down, but I did NOT slam the brakes and the car tried coming to a screeching halt anyway.
I didn't think much of it, but then I tried getting it to happen again and found out that the Brake Assist system is acting prematurely (my best guess)
The system is designed to help you slow down if it detects a panic stop with SPEED AND FORCE, i.e. you go to press the brake hard and you don't press it all the way down, but it helps you come to a complete stop.
This is great, when it is working properly. What it is doing, however is not proper. It is slamming the brakes in any scenario if you tap the brake quickly, like if someone cuts you off and you react and lightly press the brake, it will do it. This can cause a rear-end collision as you are not trying to bring the vehicle to a complete stop.
They say this is NORMAL. Well, by definition, takata airbags exploding are now considered NORMAL, although that doesn't make it safe.
The way this system is reacting is like if a shopping cart bumped your front bumper at the grocery store and the airbags went off. Yes, airbags are supposed to go off, but not with such a light impact.
This should be repeatable on a lot of GMC terrains as well as Chevrolet Equinoxes that are a few years old.
Try it out on yours and see if it does it, and if it does complain to GM so they can understand this is a real issue.
