The bolt holding the main crank shaft pulley came loose causing all exterior belts to come off as well as the interior timing belt, sheared the woodruff key, and warped pulley. The engine shut-off because timing was now off on engine and the pistons came up and bent some valves. Now I am out $3,000 dollars in repairs. Per mycarstats.com, there have been others with similar problems. This bolt/ design assembly came defective from manufacturer because there has never been any work related to this bolt and pulley.

Re: 1999 Honda Accord ex (VIN: Jhmcg667xxxxxxxxx). Opted not to drive on freeway that evening due to rush hour traffic, took back streets (probably would have been killed on freeway). Suddenly engine started to make loud noises & engine died; lost power steering. Check engine lights & all panel lights came on. Tow truck arrived, driver discovered belts came off & the pulley was broken. Bolt attaching it was sheared off & broken in half, too. Submitted anomaly to Honda corporate (case # N012003-09-1001253)(ph # (800) 999-1009) to review case once our local Honda dealer completes repairs. Corporate Honda offered "goodwill assistance" if case deemed valid enough for them to pay for some if not all of the costs. Have not heard from them yet. Honda dealership noticed pulley was also warped. They have never seen anything like this before. Reported car had 56K miles, but mistaken; should be approx. 65K. I think this is a safety issue and not just "wear & tear"; more like a design flaw or something! we have an 1987 Honda with no problems & its pulley does not even wobble like it is doing now in the 1999 since it has been repaired. It's still on a trial basis for 1 week starting 9/15/2003. To continue further may cost us an add'L $3K out of pocket with no guarantees from the dealership.

After owning the vehicle for two days it broke down on the highway. Vehicle was taken to the dealer, who replaced the battery and the alternator. On another occasion, the vehicle broke down due to an alternator bolt breaking. It was replaced. On a third occasion, the serpentine belt failed. Currently, vehicle is at dealers shop again because it will not start.

Driving down the road when the crankshaft pully fell out of the bottom of the engine, resulting in power steeering failure and engine died. The power steering went out, the altenator quit, the water pump quit. Luckily I could coast into a parking lot entrance to get off of the highway.the crankshaft bolt "crystalized" and broke off inside the crankshaft. The timing belt, crankshaft pully and bolt, and the water pump had to be replaced.

Re: 1999 Honda Accord LX (VIN: [xxx]) while my wife was driving in a residential area at 25-30 mph (approx), the engine started making clanking noise and engine died. She let it rolled, pulled over and parked on the side of the street. We discovered that the main pulley broke loose and the drive belts came off the rollers due to a broken (sheared off) bolt that attached the pulley to the crankshaft. The car has only 61K miles on it and I thought that it was totally premature. The ball Honda service rep told us that Honda Motors co. Will not cover for the repair since the warranty expired, but this is totally premature I thought, and maybe it was caused by inferior material (bolt) and/or by poor quality workmanship (over-torque'd). The car has had regular maintenance service by Honda dealer and has no previous engine work done except for the mfr recommended regularly-scheduled services.
