problem #1

Oct 172010

Accord Sedan 4 cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 60,700 miles

The car started stalling when coming to a stop and it made a strange jarring noise and stopped. I looked at the dashboard, the battery sign and the oil pressure sign was on. Next I tried to start it again after shifting to park. It started fine but shuddered to a stop when I shifted to drive and eased off the brake. The stalling happened 3 times before I was able to drive normally.

I researched online and found that a recall was issued for 2005 Honda Accord for a problem with the fuel pump. I called Honda but they said my VIN was not involved in the recall.

This actually happened the second time. After it happened the first time, I took it to a mechanic who said until the check engine light comes on or they are able to reproduce the problem, they can't do much. They pointed to idle-control-valve as a potential problem, but not sure.

Update from Oct 22, 2010: Went to the Honda dealer but they could not figure out the problem. They suggested a transmission fluid flush for $129.99 and I agreed. Incidentally, it stalled once when the technician was testing the vehicle even after the fluid flush. They tried to reproduce the problem the next two days but it did not happen. They next activated the on-board computer and asked me to bring the car back once it stalls again so they can collect the data and send it to Honda. Waiting to see what happens next.

Update from Oct 27, 2010: Finally the stalling became reproducible and eventually it was completely dead. It would start but as soon as it was put in drive, it would stall. Towed it to the same Honda dealer and they found that the transmission was kaput. They are asking for $3352 for replacing it. I'm going to call up Honda customer support and see what they have to say about transmission failure at 60K miles.
