Honda service consultant originally told me the cost to repair would be $2,800. I asked him to print the quote, and I would discuss options with my wife. He called me back an hour later to say the entire rack didn't need replacing, just the electronic module, and now the price would ONLY be $745 (including an alignment).

My mechanic said Honda ran out of a regular front-end part and substituted an inferior part on several models over several model years. Thus, I have hung on to the vehicle anticipating that Honda would issue a recall to fix the problem. However, no such recall has occurred. Good thing my mechanic is honest, because anywhere else would have probably tried to milk me for alignments or anything else they could get away with by now, just as they have been doing to many others. This issue of the car pulling hard to the left has been so prevalent for so long, I have developed shoulder problems requiring surgery because of fighting to keep the car in the lane all the time. I think Honda is dodging responsibility for this problem because they know they'll be having to shell out millions of dollars to remedy the issue. Furthermore, it defies sound reasoning they would take that stance playing with fire because, given the severity of the issue and posts I have seen from many other owners, it is only a matter of time until death occurs (if it hasn't already) - and when that happens, it will be that many more millions of dollars over they'll be liable for manslaughter, etc. It has become literally painfully apparent that Honda is only concerned about the bottom line nowadays - certainly not peoples lives and wellbeing, nor trying to salvage what was once a steller reputation.

The car has 39,892 miles on it and it needs a new Electric Power Steering Rack that Honda estimates will cost $2,900.00. Honda America as well as the dealer (Honda City on Hempstead Turnplke, Levittown NY) both have said there was a recall notice but it has expired and it will cost $2,900 to fix it.
If the vehicle losses power steering and Honda knows it how can they not fix it for free? How can a five year old vehicle with less than 40,000 miles need a repair to the power steering? This car has never been hit and most of the miles are highway miles.
This is my third Honda and unless Honda repairs it, it will be my last.

Driving the vehicle at speed, when suddenly, the vehicle starts to pull hard left, then driving for another .5 miles, switches to pulling hard right. I stopped the vehicle to investigate and everything appears to be fine. Continue to drive home but the pulling in either direction persists. Taking a tight left turn, the vehicle understeers significantly causing me to brake hard and over counter-steer to correct. After parking, the vehicle's wheel were straight, but the steering rolled hard left on its own.
