problem #1

Jun 202013

CR-V LX 2.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 80,000 miles

I drove the CRV for 20 minutes. During the drive the AC started to get slower and slower. I left the fan on and pressed the AC button to turn it off. The air continued to blow cold. When I got home I opened the hood and the AC lines were frozen from the compressor all the way into the cab. The next morning I was going to take it to the Honda dealer and the battery was flat dead. I jumped the car and the AC lines instantly started to freeze over but the AC was switched off. After one to two minutes the pressure relief valve for the AC system blew and the refrigerant blew out with a terrible noise. I pulled the relay out for the AC and was able to drive it to the dealership.

Update from Jun 24, 2013: The relay had failed and remained closed which continuously sending power to the compressor, even with the car off.  This caused the battery to drain overnight.  Once the car was started back up the AC system kicked back on and with nowhere for the pressure to go, it over pressurized, popping the relief valve.  After a new relay and refrigerant recharge, all was better.
