CR-V

  • Automatic transmission
  • 40,000 miles

The sunroof in my 2012 Honda CRV exploded while driving down the highway (approx. mileage on the car is 40,000 miles).

The explosive noise was terrifying! Luckily, I was the only one in the car. Most of the glass that ended up inside the car landed on the passenger side. There was no way that anything hit my sunroof to make this happen. There was no traffic in front of me, didn't travel under a bridge, etc.

I was traveling out of state and found an auto repair shop that patched my roof so that I could get back to my dealership (a 4 hour highway drive). The auto repairman told me that the same thing happened to his wife's car (a Volvo).

My Honda dealership replaced my sunroof, however, I was over the 36 month/36,000 miles warranty and I had to pay for the replacement.

Will never again get another car with a sunroof -- I was lucky that I was wearing sunglasses during the explosion so that nothing got into my eyes and that I kept the car on the road. And, I'm really pissed at Honda for not replacing THEIR DEFECTIVE GLASS for free.

sunroof exploded sunroof exploded

Driving down the freeway at about 60, the were no cars around and it was about 55 degrees outside. All of a sudden I heard a sound like a gunshot and my sunroof exploded and glass showered down on me. I pulled over to look at the damage and the glass was pointing up and out. Honda didn't cover it and neither did my extended warranty so I had to pay out of pocket to get it fixed. At the dealer, they said an Accord had been in a few days prior with a similar issue.
